Seems like there's a bit of backstory to the idea of what a furborg is. Is it like the Million Dollar Man, or something?

Yup, it's a bit of the same concept the the Million dollar man. Kodee was a real soldier on his planet (yeah, forgot to mention that, he's not an earthling) but him and many other got severly hurt... okay, they were practically dead. Since the brain is already used to manage a body, it's easier to put the original one with artifical help to compensatate for the extra, like the e-ball canon. Then came the exchanges with earth, that's how Kodee got here... and him freaking out in a mission. He was asked to kill an entire village of innocent and his biological (with the feelings ans memories that come with it) kicked in and he refused. The others started to shoot at the villagers so he turned his weapon against his own team and started to shoot. That's why he was deactivated and partialy disassembled.

*hmmms and pops open Kodee's chest hatch, then proceeds to lick and fondle the panda-bot's heart pump* XD
