Oh, it's not so much that she's following orders that bugs me. I mean any mercenary worth their salt would do that. I'm more bugged by the "won't even so much as use a piece of her equipment without express permission even when it's incredibly dangerous NOT to" and "freaking out over having to face down an enemy she's already beaten about a shmillion times before" thing that gets to me. It wouldn't bother me if it were any other character acting this way, but again, this is Samus "I'm-the-Only-Nintendo-Girl-Who-Doesn't-Constantly-Need-Rescuing" Aran. I don't have anything against submissive girls (I'm rather fond of them, in fact), but I don't see the need to take a character who has never been like that before and rewrite her as such simply because she's a girl. And that's pretty much what the plot drips of.
Really, Yahtzee sums it all up much more efficiently (and Britishly) than I could hope to:

To me the only things that stood out was her not using the Varia suit and grapple beam without approval, that was dumb (plot induced stupidity is common in games). Everything else was her following orders in a situation where accidental injury to possible survivors was a risk. As for "schmillion times", by chronology she'd only faced Ridley twice by the time of the story of Other M and a traumatic past that caused her to be an orphan thanks to Ridley was canon far before this game. What's stranger is that she had no reaction to Ridley in Super Metroid or Metroid, but I always considered that a limitation of the game engines they had created for those games. The plot doesn't really drip with "because she's a girl" that much at all other than in the garbage melodramatic English voice acting (voice acting plays a big part in the role of how a player interprets the words presented). It more just ties the canon material into the actual game instead of placing it outside of the game like Super Metroid or Metroid.
I've already played through it twice, both with the horrible English and in Japanese. I'll pass on Yahtzee.
Any way you slice it, when they make a character more than a one dimensional avatar for the player to guide some people are going to like it and some are going to hate it. Even if it is in character and completely canon.

Why do you think we have words like "cannon" and "non-cannon?"
I don't know about you, but I'll take "one-dimensional, multi-planetary ass kicker" over whatever the hell they promoted in Other M; I don't care how many mangas or e-comics you shove in my face to tell me that it's 'cannon.'
P.S. - double that number - 4. She'd fought him atleast 4 times before M. 5 if you count that she fights him twice in Zero Mission. And that one, along with Prime and Prime 3 had plenty of room to show some kind of 'phased expression' and they didn't.

That same reason we have any other words, words describe things. Canon (short for canonical) is an old word, certainly much older than any debate of this kind. So, I don't really know what you're getting at.
The important part is "multi-planetary ass kicker". That didn't really change in Other M except in English. I don't support the English voice acting, which I've mentioned multiple times. I haven't pulled up any comics or manga so I don't even know what you're freaking out about there.
Where are you getting you numbers from? She fought him in Metroid for the NES, then Super Metroid, then Other M. That's twice before Other M. Yeah they did have plenty of room, but didn't... again, like I said, I chalk that up to a engine limitation. The Prime series was a spin off, there's no real way for it to fit in anywhere they tried to say it does, especially thanks to Prime 3. That and none of the core Metroid team was really involved in the Prime series. I had fun with them but they don't really fit anywhere into the pre-established Metroid universe.

I'd be lying if I said Samus's character from Other M didn't make me fly into a frothing fury but the only reason I can think of that she freaked out when she saw Ridley is that she had no idea to assume he was there.
Metroid 1/Zero mission: Space pirates were there, Ridley. Robot Ridley wut?
Prime: Space pirates were there, Mecha Ridley.
Prime 3: Space pirates were there, Mecha supah powerful sugoi phazon Ridley WITH A FUCKING ENERGY SWORD. Twice.
Super: Space pirates were there, original live Ridley. wait, wat.
Other M: Geneticly engineered space pirates so no actual reason for Ridley to be he-OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK HE'S LITTLE BIRDY WHAT THE NUT FUCK ADAM HOLD ME THE BLACK GUY DIDN'T DIE WHAT FLYING FUCK IS GOING ON
Granted, really stupid and unlikely but that's as much sense you can really draw from team ninja's WAIFU samus. I.E., you can't make any sense from it.

You know, there are some circumstances to her meeting with Ridley in this game that is different from the other times. Game engines aside, when she met Ridley in the prime series he was a cyborg, showing every sign that he was previously defeated by her, in Super Metroid the space pirates simply brought him back, either through medical technology or cloning, but THIS time there were no space pirates, Ridley couldn't possibly be back and yet there he was. At that point he stops looking like an enemy and more like some immortal being that can never be defeated. That combined with the fact that she's likely suffering from PTSD from when he killed her family is why she freaked out in that scene.
Also I think the guys who made the game drew inspiration from the Metroid manga, in there she freaked out and went catatonic the first time she saw Ridley too.
Oh and the Varia suit example was stupid, but it couldn't be helped because that's how the game worked. In previous games you'd have to run through hot areas without the suit for a bit, same as here. I'm not going to try and rationalize it as it only makes sense from a gameplay standpoint and not the plot.

Nintendo saw they had a non-sexist female character that was incredibly popular...so they turned around and jarred all her fans XD
Honestly, I'm more annoyed with the voice actress and the 'Samus doesn't do X out of respect'...it just feels very off. But gameplay-wise, it's a lot of fun and is more of what I was looking for in a 3D Metroid than what the Prime games had to offer. I think Other M feels very Japanese, while Prime felt very American...if that makes sense X3

"Doesn't do X" out of respect is in line with a lot of other material. Respectful is definitely something she's always been portrayed as and is a common Japanese ideal. The American voice actress was garbage though, the Japanese one was a lot more "right" and made the dialog feel weighted very differently; actually gave you the impression she was concerned and being respectful instead of just being whiny.
Well, i found the game to be fun, the story was much more evident than in any other metroid to date which i knew would have its troubles due to the content of it. Besides the fact, on a computer/techie level , i noticed many familiar things. if found that this game was almost literally a wii clone of fusion. Most of the game's elements were like that of fusion, and they even ripped a fusion boss from the game. if you played fusion you'd notice. some of the monsters were familiar to the ones from the prime series too, and some sounds were copied. Like for instance, the charging bull of the ice stage was very familiar to the sheegoth from prime. I'm a game programmer in the works so i cant help but look at everything this game has. Im the kind of gamer that looks at every game as its own thing and this game did well, but it was also just too short. So much to offer but so little to use it in. i loved how long the prime games were and i just got hooked on that i guess. Long before when i played fusion for the first time i knew this game was coming, and i'm glad it did, i wouldn't call samus whinny, no, not really. how would you face this kind of thing when things you became attached to were lost. I view this game with my backstory and i feel they did a really good job with it.
Ever notice how this place's initials and where Fusion takes place are the exact same?
But yah, it was a bit different to have Adam leading things. But hey, different can work.
It amuses me how many find issues with the whole independent female thing, when if the lead were a guy they'd be all "BEST GAME EVAR!!!" l3
