It's the same here. Unless you've got a serious bug that keeps you from working or a non-life threatening medical emergency, calling off for a day doesn't require a note. Just a phone call is fine... so long as you don't make a habit of calling off, which seeing as our fluffball squiggle is a workaholic, that won't be a problem.
Us Americans ask ourselves that all the time. Especially if a doctor's note is expected for something like food poisoning. :/ Some places are better than others, but a lot of "lower jobs" like fast food, etc do this and it's about as bad of an idea as you'd think.
