It was a chilly autumn evening, and N was reading with Zorua. As they both lay in bed, N realized it had been 2 weeks since he last saw Corona, the young Cubone he had encountered in the White Forest. Somehow, he had felt a connection with her. He tried to get her off his mind, but it was no use. He had to see her again.
“Zorua, we’re going back to the White Forest.”
“What?? But you didn’t want to go there last time!”
“Remember Corona? The Cubone?”
“Yeah, and her mean mom.”
“Well, we’re going to see her again.”
“Cool! Maybe I can play with her!”
“Yes, you can.”
Like last time, Reshiram flew N to the White Forest, where he started looking for Corona, or at least Myra. He had no luck, so he turned to Zorua for help.
“Zorua, try to find Corona. You remember her scent, right?”
“How could I forget?”
“Ok, now let’s find her.”
Zorua sniffed the ground to detect Corona’s scent, and eventually he found a trail.
“This way!”
Zorua led N to a small, dark den that looked dilapidated. Corona was sitting at the entrance, as if she was waiting for them. She turned to look at N and Zorua, but she wasn’t full of energy like she was last time. In fact, she seemed worried, or sad.
“Where’s your mama?”
“She’s hurt.”
Myra slowly walked out of the den, and N felt his stomach turn at the sight of her. She was bruised and bloodied all over, with open wounds all along her neck. Her left arm was broken, dangling like a nunchaku. N’s eyes began welling up as he processed what was in front of him. What had happened??
“Myra…”
“Those damn Nido-things attacked the den, with Corona in it. I nearly gave my life trying to protect her… I fear I may not survive another night.”
“No! You’ll survive, I know you will. If I have a Potion, I can heal the less serious wounds.”
“...Alright, I will allow you to heal me.”
N got out a Potion, and sprayed it on Myra’s cuts and bruises. The minor injuries were completely healed, but the more serious bruises were still present, and nothing could be done about Myra’s broken arm.
“I’ve had enough of them… I’m going after them.”
“What?! You can’t! They’ll kill you!”
“They won’t, as long as I stay focused.”
“You can’t be overconfident, Myra.”
“I’m not. I’ve been in battles against stronger Pokémon, and won. I’m fully capable of taking down Nidoking and Nidoqueen.”
N was about to respond, but he stayed quiet, for fear of offending Myra. He wanted to ask if she was simply intimidating her past opponents, but he began to doubt this, since Myra had scars when they first met.
“And you’re coming with me, N. I need to tell you something on the way.”
“...Ok.”
“Corona, stay in the den.”
N and Zorua followed Myra through the White Forest, looking for the venomous kaiju duo. N was quite nervous, since he knew how dangerous Nidoking and Nidoqueen were individually, let alone together. His stomach reflected his nervousness, gurgling loudly enough that Zorua stared at N’s abdomen. N couldn’t hold in his gas and walk at the same time, so he just farted without resisting it at all.
*Pfrrrrppppp*
N covered his nose just as Myra turned to look at him. He expected her to be repulsed by the smell, but her expression didn’t change at all.
“Don’t worry, N. My sense of smell’s been diminishing since Corona was born. I’m an old Marowak, you know.”
N wasn’t very reassured by this, even though it meant Myra wouldn’t judge him for farting. It was probably because of his own repulsion to his gas, plus Myra wasn’t Goyangi, so it wouldn’t be the same. As the Sun set, Myra decided to tell N her story.
“If somehow I don’t survive, let me tell you why Nidoking and Nidoqueen are intent on killing me and my daughter.”
“Tell me.”
“I’ve always been a skilled fighter, but when Corona was born, I realized I’d have to give up fighting to take care of her. Well, I thought I did. I would protect her, of course, but I never thought there’d be a time when her life was constantly in danger. That all changed when… when…”
“When what?”
“A Nidorino wandered into the nest. Seeing Corona as prey, it attacked her. I was lucky to be nearby enough to hear Corona cry out. When I got there, Corona had a wound on her right arm and Nidorino’s horn was tipped with blood. The damn thing had poisoned Corona. Terrified for my daughter’s life, I furiously lashed out at Nidorino and broke off its horn. Then, I…”
“...You what?”
“I bludgeoned Nidorino to death.”
N felt sick upon hearing these words.
“After Nidorino’s life faded, Nidoqueen happened to come out of the bushes. Seeing what happened to her son, she attempted to tackle me with her venomous spurs extended. I managed to dodge her attacks, and with each whack of my bone staff, her fighting spirit diminished. Eventually, she just left, swearing to take revenge on me. I was able to heal Corona's poison with a Pecha Berry.”
“So what happened next?”
“The very next day, both Nidoqueen and Nidoking attacked the nest, but instead of targeting me, they targeted Corona. I, once again, fiercely defended her with my life. I was able to chase them off again, but I knew Corona was no longer safe. As long as she was alive, Nidoking and Nidoqueen would try to kill her. Since I took their child away from them, they are trying to do the same with Corona. To keep Corona safe for as long as possible, we moved to the den we currently live in. Unfortunately, Nidoking and Nidoqueen know where we live now, so I’ve made my decision. I have to kill them once and for all.”
“But your arm’s broken, it’s not safe!”
“I still have my bone arm, I’ll be alright. I’m agile enough to dodge every one of their attacks, as long as I keep my mind set on fighting them.”
N had held in his gas for the entire explanation, so he figured it would be a good time to let it out.
*pfffrrRRRRRRFFFrrrppp*
Once again, Myra made no comment, and just continued onwards. N just pulled his shirt over his nose. It’s hard for him not to suffer from his own gas, after all.
Eventually, they came to a wide, open field, with a single rock at its center. N and Zorua looked around for Nidoking and Nidoqueen, when Myra suddenly took a battle stance. Nidoking and Nidoqueen walked out of the forest from the opposite end of the field, with Nidoking throwing aside a tree just to get there.
“Myra… you came here after all.”
“Yes, I have. I’m here to finish you and Nidoqueen.”
“Foolish, really. Just so you know what you’re up against, it won’t be your good arm I go for this time, but your neck.”
“I hardly value my life anymore, but it won’t matter. Do you understand how agile I am?”
“Are you really? Then how come I’m able to do this?”
Nidoking attempted to stab Myra with the horn on his head, but to his surprise, she jumped immediately before the horn could hit her, and she thwacked him with the bone staff. She landed on the rock, and spun around her bone staff several times before pointing it at him.
“This is what you’re up against. N, do not engage in this.”
Nidoking grimaced, and turned towards Nidoqueen.
“Nidoqueen, kill her.”
“You don’t have to tell me to do that; I’d do it anyway!”
Nidoqueen charged towards Myra, who sprinted towards her and slid under her, before using Bonemerang on the back of her head. Then, she jumped on top of Nidoqueen and bashed her in the forehead before turning her attention back towards Nidoking. The massive, Baragon-like Pokémon hissed at Myra before lowering his head and charging at her. Myra immediately darted at him and swung her bone at his knee. Nidoking tumbled to the ground, and his horn got stuck in the dirt. After some struggling, he managed to twist his horn out and ran back towards Myra. In preparation for the oncoming attack, Myra used Protect. Right when the horn would’ve penetrated her heart, Nidoking was knocked back by the barrier. Myra then used Focus Energy and threw her bone staff at Nidoking’s unprotected abdomen. Nidoking was incapacitated, unable to attack Myra.
“Nidoqueen, get her! NOW!”
Nidoqueen’s claws became tipped with a purple fluid, and she attempted to cleave into Myra. The Marowak ducked and countered with her bone staff, then swung with all her might, breaking Nidoqueen’s jaw.
“You really think Toxic would work? My daughter knows that move!”
Nidoqueen ran off, knowing she could never fight again. Nidoking, enraged at the sight of his crippled mate, roared at Myra, swearing to kill her.
“I’m ready for you, Nidoking! Come at me!”
Nidoking attempted to Double Kick Myra, but all he did was knock her back. She landed on her feet, and took aim at him for Bonemerang. But before she could throw it, she saw Corona in the bushes. Corona had been watching the battle, and had a look of horror on her face. Unable to take her eyes off of her daughter, Myra didn’t notice Nidoking charging at her with his horn pointed towards her. The moment she came to her senses. Nidoking was within 3 feet from her. It was too late for Myra to counterattack, and Nidoking drove his horn through her chest just inches above her heart, impaling her.
N gasped at the sight of the attack. His eyes began to fill with tears, and his body almost went limp. He had watched his own mother be killed when he was only three, and now he was watching the mother of a young Pokémon die. Myra kept her head up for as long as she could, trying not to go gentle into that good night, before she could no longer support her own head, and she lay on Nidoking’s head. N could see Myra struggling to grip her bone staff.
“You fool… this is not over! Even when I’m gone, my presence will always haunt you! This battle will scar you for the rest of your life, and…”
Her voice turned into a death rattle.
“...You will live knowing you left a child… motherless, and…”
Before she could finish the sentence, Myra’s breath left her lungs, and all life in her had faded. Her eyes were completely devoid of any evidence that she was so full of vitality. Her limp body slid cleanly off Nidoking’s horn, and fell to the ground with a hard thud. Her skin already looked like it was decaying, since Nidoking’s venom had begun destroying Myra’s body. Nidoking scoffed at her.
“What makes you think that wasn’t my intention?”
N was wrenched with sobs at this point, his fists balled up in anticipation of an attack. At this point, he could no longer hold back his rage, and he screamed at Nidoking with absolute fury in his eyes.
“ZORUA! Night Daze!!”
Zorua’s body glowed red, and he raised his paws. He then slammed his paws into the ground, and a purple shockwave of energy spread throughout the area. Nidoking was thrown into the air and then he fell to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust. As N was about to command Zorua once more, Zorua refused to attack, and jumped onto N’s shoulder. N looked at him angrily, then realized what he had done. Nidoking had hit the ground so hard that both of his legs were broken, and he crawled away slowly, using his arms to pull himself forward. He noticed Corona in the bushes, who shed a single tear that glimmered in the moonlight. N’s hands were shaking as he felt a horrible feeling fill his entire body. He fell on his knees, and just began crying. He had attempted exactly what Nidoking and Nidoqueen had intended to do: get revenge. He felt so wrong, so guilty, that he wanted to die. What good was he if he caused more harm? N didn’t feel like the kind person he was inside; he felt like a murderer, a criminal. He sobbed so hard that he could barely breathe. Zorua licked him, knowing that N didn’t truly want to hurt anyone. As Zorua comforted him, N remembered Corona. Nidoking would surely try to kill her if she was left alone. He realized he’d have to do something to keep her safe. He knew it would hurt him, but it was for her own good.
N and Zorua started walking back to the den, and they heard something rustling through the bushes. N could tell it was Corona, because of the strong odor that accompanied the rustling. He covered his nose, and continued walking. When they got to the den, Corona was in the darkest corner, weeping. N peered in and, to his horror, Corona was wearing Myra’s skull, which still had blood on it.
“Corona… I’m so sorry.”
“But you didn’t kill Mama… why are you sorry?”
“I… I tried to kill Nidoking. I know it scared you, so I’m sorry.”
“Yeah… I’m still scared.”
“Do you want to know why, though?” N was in disbelief at what he just said.
“...Sure.”
“I lost my mother when I was about your age. Not in terms of years, but I was as young as you were. When Nidoking killed her, I felt the same way I did when I saw my mother die.”
“That’s so sad!”
“It is. And… I… I’m sorry. I have to do this.”
“Do what?”
N felt a disgusted feeling go through him, as he was strongly against it:
“...Catch you.”
Corona was hesitant, but she decided to let N catch her. N tearfully through a Poké Ball at Corona. The catch was successful, and N picked up the Poké Ball.
“I’m so sorry Corona… I had to do it, to keep you safe.”
N flew on Reshiram back to Striaton City. He went into his apartment, and decided to let Corona out of her Poké Ball. Corona was still crying, and hugged N tightly. N knew that now he was the one taking care of her, and he took her to bed. N took off his white jacket, and got into bed with Corona, hugging and comforting her.
“Corona… I’m here. I’m right here. I’ll protect you from now on.”
Corona, comforted by N’s voice, began to drift off. N had his nose pinched the whole time, but he knew that if he was going to take care of Corona, he’d have to get used to her smell. He uncovered his nose, and his eyes immediately burned. He was already still crying, but his eyes became even more teary because of the odor. Nonetheless, he endured it, and allowed himself to smell Corona’s natural scent. He had more difficulty falling asleep because of this, but he did eventually fall asleep. N and Corona slept peacefully in bed, hugging each other, while Zorua slept next to N’s head. Yet, N knew he had attempted to kill a Pokémon that night. He would have to learn from the experience, and use it to better himself in the future.
