More art for my buddy Burd's FableVerse, for the theme month I forced on both on us just cuz.
The predators that existed on their own in their world before prey, all had souls to grant them power. When consuming another predator, they would also consume the soul and at it to their own. And keep growing in power and strength.
In a way for nature to keep predators from just wiping themselves out due to greed, the soul came with empathy. If a predator was challenged by another predator much weaker than themselves.. they would kneel down in surrender. Knowing the other would have no choice against them, they would choose to let the weaker win and give them a chance to grow in strength and experience the cycle until it was their turn to kneel.
But when prey was created, it was without a soul. And thus without empathy.
When they changed from consuming predator's flesh and soul, they hungered for more. But without the empathy to tell them to stop. All while the predators could only recognize the prey as weaker, their empathy forcing them to not fight back when attacked. The prey not stopping until there were no predators left with souls to consume.
