Please say hello to an absolute lad.
Oh boy. Who remembers this old thing from 2011? The second sewing project I'd ever attempted? This remake has been a long time coming. New Vaughn is less of a plush and more of an articulated doll, and I am not exaggerating when I say this was as much work as any fursuit I've made. Maybe more. Like I never want to see anyone complain about the price of an art doll again. This was a lot. A LOT.
On the technical side: the body was sculpted in clay with reinforced wire joints. The whole thing was given a skin of fleece and faux fur, then painted with acrylic. Made my own doll eyes, clothes, everything- literally the only thing I didn't craft from scratch was his shoes, those are just modified doll shoes, but otherwise I tried to spare no detail and his braces are as close to the real thing as I can make 'em at this scale. (Those are oversized steel BBQ skewers I bent, drilled, and cut.) He's compatible with most 18" doll stuff, though he stands a little closer to 20" with the big ole ears. My only regret is that I didn't account for enough flexibility in the initial clay sculpt, I wish he was just a little more poseable, but that's the only way I could possibly be any happier with this right now.
On the sentimental side: I kind of addressed this in the comment section of his ref sheet the other day, but out of all my OCs it's Vaughn who tends to bring out my best and most innovative work, and I think this kind of exemplifies that... but no, seriously, I've learned completely new skills and tried completely new techniques just for the sake of portraying him better over the years. I wouldn't have gone to this length for just any character. Don't tell the rest of my roster, but he's secretly the best.
Maybe in another 10-12 years I'll be crazy enough to tackle a fully ball-jointed figure with hyperrealistic needle felting?? Haha, who knows. This fleece and paint technique is kind of weird, but I honestly dig it.
Would love to hear your thoughts and answer any questions about how he was made, just please don't make me tap the sign!

everything is homemade? gee, kudos for that. :) people just can't fathom how much work that has been, especially if they have never tried it themselves.
he kind of looks sad, or unhappy, but maybe that was intented. :) love the details and I think he's already fairly flexible to begin with.

Holy cow, this is incredible work! I don't doubt that it took ages, but I think it's obvious all the love you put into this resulting in an amazing creation. I can't believe you made those braces yourself (well, I can believe it, but my god, what an undertaking)! He looks phenomenal.
