Sorry this one's late it ended up being a lot longer then I thought it would be.
Part 8
“So,” Kai asked, “What's the new job you’ve got for me?”
“One of the rich corporate types needs security for a big party he is having.” Bruce replied
“Really?” Kai said unenthusiastically.
“You said you wouldn't veto things for being ‘boring’ this time.” Bruce said pleading.
“I know.” Kai sighed. “But, don't they normally have their own people for stuff like that? Why are they contracting outside help?”
“He had a big attempted hit on him not too long ago, another corporation I think.” Bruce said with a shrug “Put a lot of his guards out of action for a while so he is looking to get some extra help in the meantime.”
“Maybe I’ll get to see some action after all.” Kai said, her ears perking up.
“I wouldn’t get your hopes up.” Bruce replied. “First thing though is getting you something to wear. The guards have a dress code, you know how those types can be about image.”
“Uhg” Kai groaned.
—
Kai stared at herself in the mirror, her weight had finally leveled out, though not before she managed to get even bigger. The guards were required to wear black suits though she had been allowed to wear a skirt if she wanted. She had decided on the skirt because she thought it would make concealing her gun easier but she had later been informed as an outside contractor she was not allowed to carry any type of firearm. Now it was just riding up as she turned in front of the mirror.
“I look like an office worker.” Kai sighed
“A sexy office worker.” Bruce said leaning into the room
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” Kai said, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah,” Bruce said with a grin “If it makes you feel any better I can’t wait to get you out of those clothes either.”
Kai let out a little laugh leaning in and kissing him.

The party had been going for several hours now and showed no sign of stopping any time soon. Kai was pretty sure there was some speech or toast that was supposed to happen before the night was over but it didn’t seem to be happening any time soon.
“Man, I wish I could sit down.” Kai muttered under her breath. Her augmented strength or shields doing nothing to help her feet, sore from hours of standing around. She had spent the early part of the party sneaking snacks from the catering but had been driven off after the chef started to give her a dirty look. She looked around at the other guards who all seemed to be standing off near the elevator or off out of the way as they tried to look intimidating. Kai made her way closer to Rudanovsky the host, in the seemingly increasingly unlikely event that something interesting happened tonight; she was going to make sure she was close to the action if there was any.
Trying to think about how she would break in if she was on the other side Kai’s attention was brought to the obvious windows. While they were on the 50th floor the 3 story tall glass window covering every side of the room seemed like a needless vulnerability especially for someone who had just had an attempt on his life. “I guess that’s why they are doing it.” Thought Kai. “Needs to prove they aren’t frightened and that they are in control.”
Kai moved to put herself between the host and the closest window as she heard a yell coming in through her coms device followed by a burst of static. Kai turn running to close the gap between her and her client just as she saw a flash from the window to her left. An explosion rocked the room, splinters of glass flying from the window. Two figures propelling in through the hole where the empty window used to be. Raising their guns at Rudanovsky, Kai arrived just in time easily shielding him behind her large frame. Flashes of yellow light popped up as the bullets impacted her kinetic barrier as the gunmen opened fire.
Kai found herself once again annoyed by the fact that she was not deemed trusted enough to carry any type of firearm as an outside contractor. Running forward making sure to keep herself between her client and the hired guns. The gunman seemed so shocked by the speed at which Kai closed the distance that the first didn’t even move away as she ran up to him grabbing him.
Ripping the gun from his hands Kai hurled the man at the other gunman leaving both of them in a pile on the floor.
Kai scaned the room, in the commotion a third man had appeared from near the elevator stepping over one of several guards that lay on the floor around him. Kai ran at the third assailant as he raised his weapon. Kai was about 30 feet from him when the energy weapon fired. Kai’s left eye went black as her augments crashed. Kai stumbled forward as her augments cut out changing from running to falling forward, being carried forward by her ridiculous momentum. Exerting as much effort as she could, Kai turned her fall into a tackle as she hit the gunman, both of them slamming into the floor.
‘Rebooting’ her augments displayed as she lay on the floor. ‘Please wait 2% completed’ Kai went to reach for her head as she lay there on the ground but her arm didn’t move all the way just twitching slightly. With effort she was able to after trying again but just barely. Kai rubbed her eyes looking around. She was laying down on her stomach, she tried to scan the room attempting to push herself up enough that she could look behind her but the dead weight of her augments kept her from pushing herself up enough to see all the way behind her.
‘Rebooting 6% completed’ From what she could see and more importantly what she could hear it looked like the shooting had stopped. Another guard rushed past her quickly out of her view; she assumed to check on Rudanovsky though she couldn’t tell from on the floor.
‘Rebooting 72%’ A few minutes passed as the distressed party goers were rushed out of the destroyed room, before she heard footsteps approach her. Looking up she saw Rudanovsky standing above her. Rudanovsky leaned down addressing the wolf “Good Job, My men can take him now for… questioning.”
Kai looked down only just now noticing the unconscious gunman still pinned under her. “Oh yeah, of course, ” Kai said, trying to think of an excuse for why she couldn’t get off the ground that wouldn’t hurt her newfound reputation.
“Your operator was right, you do make a good human shield being so big.” Rudanovsky said turning away “I’m sure I'll have more work for you at some point if you're interested.”
‘Rebooting 88%’ “Uhh...” Kai said blushing with embarrassment as Rudanovsky walked away.
The two guards that remained standing there looked at each other before looking back at Kai unsure of what to do.
‘Rebooting 93%’ Kai struggled trying to push herself up only to be left panting. “Uh… give me a minute” she sighed heavily.
