Febru-arty 2022 no. 10: Galileo's Phantom
"Famed astronomer Galileo Galilei observed the planet Jupiter and its moons many times. On several occasions in 1610 he reported seeing a spindly, spiderlike protrusion around the planet, which he described as relocating randomly or even separating from Jupiter, then returning.
"Rival astronomers including Simon Marius did not report observing such an object, leading to it being termed Galileo's Phantom or Galileo's Spider. Some modern astronomers have faulted Galileo's telescope-making abilities, though others including Carl Sagan have urged withholding judgment."
Little bit of cosmic horror for ya! Eldritch creatures and terrors from deep space are something I enjoy.
That's Galileo's real handwriting I copy-pasted. His telescope wasn't strong enough to resolve Jupiter's atmospheric banding or the Great Red Spot, but I took some artistic liberty.
