Full color drawing for
dingopatagonico of his characters Dora and Kurfust on the beach.
They are having fun out on the beach with a group of friends, and one of the girls has a horse along. Dora expresses interest in taking a ride, so Kurfust boosts his sister up on the animal. Dora barely gets seated when the beach horse gets excited and unexpectedly takes off into a gallop down along the shore, leaving Kurfust behind who is unable to catch up to help. Riding bareback, she manages to stay on by squeezing the horse with her legs and gripping tightly to the horse's mane. But this whole incident has given Dora quite a scare. When the horse finally stops and she gets off, this poor girl will probably need some holding by someone, to let her have a good cry if she needs to. I volunteer for the job!
This drawing is the first inked and colored image (by me) that I have uploaded onto FA, and is only the third color drawing I have done so far. There were a lot of firsts for me in doing this drawing, with not much prior experience to go on. I did the initial sketches on paper, which are now in my scraps section. For the horseback pose, I referenced a photo of myself riding horseback. The original sketches are traditional media, but all the inking and coloring was done digitally, with the aid of my brand new Wacom tablet, which is the first time I have ever used it.
I drew Dora first. I love how her body turned out, but not that happy with her face and head- she's supposed to be a German Shepherd dog, but her head looks more like a fox, and her eyes are a bit too far apart. But, I got her facial expression right. By the time I got to Kurfust, I had more experience and did a better job on him, and am very satisfied with how he turned out.
As far as the background goes, this is the first time I have ever drawn/painted the ocean, and I am happy with that, too. Put a lot of time and work into this, went very slow as I am just starting out and learning a lot. I know little or nothing about shading or highlighting yet, so I pretty much skipped doing that. I hope to learn how to do that soon.
