Febru-arty 2022 no. 11A: Vexillological Fever-dreams
Flags! I made flags! These are flags for the fictitious countries in my alternate history novel Annunah Rising (in your favorite bookshop no later than 2040). This one is the flag of the Haudenosaunee (the People of the Long House or, in our world, the Iroquois).
This flag keeps to several of the Haudenosaunee's cultural symbols. Purple is a traditional color for the People of the Long House, taken from a mollusk-shell-derived pigment they use to dye wampum. The central fire is kept alight by the Onondaga, a founding nation. The other four founding nations in the Long House, represented by the four squares encircling the fire, are the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, and Mohawk. The Long House later admitted a sixth member, the Tuscarora. In my alternate history they have many hundreds of member nations across eastern Annunah (North America). The white cross signifies the four cardinal directions and the four roots of the Great Tree of Peace, a white pine under which the Long House was founded.
The Haudenosaunee already have a pretty neat flag, and this is emphatically *not* an attempt by a descendant of settler-colonizers to revise that, but in an alternate world where the Haudenosaunee rise to be a world power, you gotta figure their flag will look a bit different just by virtue of quirks of history.
