NOTE: It's written as a scene and not as a story on its own, so it begins rather abruptly. I've included a setting tag because I haven't decided what Sarah and Felix are talking about before this scene begins and don't want to just slap something together to make it feel less abrupt. Sorry!
The word count is also not exact... I made the thumbnail before completing my little tweaks and edits. BUT it is close.
There is technically "violence" but it is no worse than what you might find in a cartoon show made for 7-year-olds.

A Lesson Learned
(Sarah and Felix head out the school doors after school lets out.)
Immediately, the smell struck her nose--- smoke, from her left. Felix coughed into his sleeve. Sarah peered down the side of the stairs. There, leaning against the brick wall with a half-smoked cigarette hanging from his mouth, was Flash. On seeing her, the gator brightened and drew the cigarette from his teeth. He breathed out the smoke and waved, smiling wide.
Beaming, Sarah rushed down and swung around the bottom of the stairs to meet him. But when Felix didn't follow, she paused, casting a glance over her shoulder. Felix had just reached the bottom of the stairs. Now he stood there, covering his nose. Sarah tilted her head. "You coming?"
"I'll wait back here," said Felix, voice muffled by his jacket sleeve. He waved with his other paw. "You go on."
Sarah half-smiled back at him; he really hated the smell of cigarettes. They didn't bother her at all; perhaps she was just used to their unique odor. She strolled right up to Flash and hugged him. He chuckled, hugging her back. "Glad to see you too, Princess."
Sarah scoffed lightly, drawing back. "Please. Not in front of the whole school."
Flash grinned. "Why not?" He put the cigarette back in his mouth and ran his scaly hand through her loose bangs. Then he freed her hair from its ponytail with a mischievous twinkle in his stormy eyes. When Sarah snatched for her hair scarf back, he looped it over his own neck and tied it like an ascot. He adjusted his leather cap, maintaining that goofy, boyish grin. "Tell me I don't rock it better than you."
Sarah giggled. "You don't."
He shrugged, puffing out a great plume of smoke. "Well, you look better without it."
"Uh, that doesn't mean you look any better with it," laughed Sarah. She planted both handpaws on her hips, one eyebrow quirked. "What are you doing here, anyway?"
He tossed the cigarette butt into the dirt and ground it out with his heel. "I'm here to take ya home. Or... so I told your dad." Flash grinned. "But before then. You wanna go do somethin'? Grab a bite, see a movie?"
Sarah smiled, charmed. "I'd love to. That is, if Felix is OK walking home alone..." She glanced back at the slender gray cat, who still kept his distance.
He shrugged. "It's fine, Sarah. See you tomorrow." He turned around, waving goodbye. "Have fun."
"See ya." Sarah waved back, smiling chipperly.
Flash put his hands down his jacket pockets. "So, where to? You know any good places to eat besides that burger joint?"
"Nowhere I can afford," said Sarah.
Flash, who was flat broke himself, shrugged. "Duly noted."
"Unless you're up to sharing a box of donuts."
"You married to that? Cause I'm hungry for somethin' savoury, not sweet."
"Also duly noted," said Sarah. "Sorry. I'd buy you a whole steak dinner if I could."
Flash raised his hands. "It's cool. Hangin' with you is what counts. Guess it don't matter where we eat... so long as we eat. Donuts it is; I'm starving, I ain't about to complain." He offered her his elbow.
Sarah looped her arm in his and they began to walk. She chuckled softly. "So that's why you offered to take me home, huh? You were thinking with your stomach. As usual." She elbowed his side.
Flash's smile was gentle, yet wry. "Well... I can't say that wasn't kind of true."
"Love the honesty."
"But I was thinkin' with my heart too." He sighed. "Plus, I was gettin' stuffy sittin' around in that house of yours. I needed to get out."
"Hey Sarah. Who's the new boyfriend?"
The pair paused. Sarah let out a quiet scoff; Jonny, approaching from the stairs.
"Did Felix finally dump you?"
Sarah stepped forward, giving the lanky coyote the coldest glare she could muster. "First of all, Felix was never my boyfriend. Second---"
"Oh sure, try to deny it now that he's gone. Don't feel bad; he was gonna dump you eventually. You're not pretty enough for him." He barked a cruel snicker. "Now you're goin' out with this tramp. Big, dumb and scaly. I guess he's more your type, huh."
"Hey. Loud-mouth." Flash sauntered in front of Sarah, chest out, thumbs hooked in his pants pockets. "I notice you don't got a girl. But if ya did, I bet she'd dump you in a heartbeat."
Jonny reacted the same way he always did in the face of intimidation, with that smarmy half-smile on his face. He snorted. "And you think dating her, of all the way prettier babes in this town, makes you better? But I guess swampers are used to the bottom of the barrel."
Flash edged closer, frowning deeply; Sarah sensed the tension in him growing. She hoped he wouldn't do something stupid. "Insult me all you like, man. But keep Sarah out of it."
Jonny's dark eyes twinkled. "Is that a threat?" he scoffed.
"Call my girl ugly again and I'll show you the meaning of 'threat'." His voice was measured and calm, despite his body language. Sarah held her breath; she had a sinking feeling about this. Before she could open her mouth to warn Flash not to go any further, Jonny raised both handpaws.
"Whoa, hold your horses, man," he chuckled, now the slightest bit nervous. "I didn't say she was ugly. I mean, she's pretty for a hyena. Maybe. But hey... still looks like one."
Flash's posture tensed even more. "Oh. So you're that kinda guy, huh?" he rasped icily. Then calm and cool Flash was gone. He snatched Jonny by the collar of his vest and yanked him forward with a loud hiss, mouth open in a toothy snarl. His massive green tail lashed behind him.
"Whoa, hey! It wasn't personal! She's just---"
"She's just what?" Flash spat. "Not good enough 'cause of how she looks? Who she was born to?" He shook Jonny once. "Maybe if you'd shut your mouth once in a while and use your head, you might figure out she's a better person than you could ever be. Oh, but you ain't gonna admit that." He shook the hapless coyote again, clutching the vest fabric tighter.
Sarah's skin crawled; he was one false move away from crossing a dangerous line. "Flash."
His posture relaxed. "What?" He never stopped staring down Jonny, who looked pastier and sweatier the longer Flash held him in place.
"He's a loser. He gets it. You don't have to waste your breath on him. Just put him down and let's go."
"Put him down?" Flash's wide mouth twisted into a vicious smirk. "I can do that."
Sarah stared, incredulous as her boyfriend threw Jonny into the nearest bush like he was nothing. "Flash!"
Flash shrugged. "What? I put him down."
The bully stumbled back to his feet, glaring hard at Flash with renewed ire. "Hey. You're not supposed to do that on campus," Jonny sniped. He brushed the leaves and twigs from his tail.
"So? I ain't a student. The rules don't apply to me." Flash thumbed him off. "Now get lost, loser. Before I teach you a lesson you'll never forget."
Jonny balked. He seemed to take that advice at first, to Sarah's relief--- but there was a handful of students watching the drama unfold. That changed Jonny's mind; no way would his pride allow Sarah's new boyfriend to humiliate him like that in front of so many witnesses. He faced Flash again, fists clenched. "You wanna fight, swamper? Let's take it to the park, huh?"
"No need." Flash marched right back up to him and shoved him once--- hard. The coyote stumbled backwards--- and in that second off-guard, Flash right-hooked him in the mouth--- harder. Jonny fell to his side, holding his jaw and howling in pain. Sarah's own jaw dropped; she was stunned. The other students murmured amongst themselves, every bit as shocked as Sarah.
Flash knelt down beside Jonny. "Learn your lesson?"
Jonny groaned.
"You're a fast learner. Remember: Idiot grandstander, plus insulting my girl, equals big green knuckle sandwich." He showed off his massive fist, the toothy smirk on his face turning even more wicked.
Sarah's stomach turned; he was relishing in this, wasn't he? He was gonna get himself caught!
"Flash, come on!" Sarah snapped. He looked up; the smug satisfaction vanished that instant. Sarah pointed away from the school. "Let's get out of here before someone calls Grimmark and bans you from the campus for hitting a student."
"They can do that?" Flash's brow lifted.
Her brow furrowed. "Yes. This isn't like the Ravenfield schools. You can't just throw a punch and get away with it." She held out her paw. "Let's go."
Flash hauled himself up and took the paw she'd offered.
Sarah dragged him across the street, cutting through the field and the park. Halfway to the playground, she let go of his hand and sighed, allowing her throbbing heart to slow down. "Flash, I know... I know he's a terrible person. But you didn't have to punch him."
"But I wanted to punch him," said Flash, nonchalant. He strolled to Sarah's side and matched her pace. "The creep basically said you were ugly 'cause of your species. I couldn't just let him get away with that."
"He says that stuff all the time. I tune him out," said Sarah, folding her arms.
"All the time?" Flash clenched both fists before shoving them in his jacket. "You're makin' me wanna go back for seconds." His tail lashed.
"He'll get what he deserves. Don't be so vengeful." She paused and grabbed his arm, pleading up into his stormy blues. He looked back down at her, his frown softening. "Promise me you won't punch anyone else, no matter what they say to me, OK?" He remained silent, the curve of his brow loosening. Sarah rubbed his arm, lip turning upward. "At least not on school grounds?"
Flash sighed, breaking. "All right. For you, I'll try not to." He ran his hand through her hair, a warm smile bursting onto his face. "Next time he calls you ugly, remember how beautiful I think you are."
Sarah could feel her face turning pink. "Gosh... that's so corny. And embarrassing." She leaned up to peck his cheek. "But sweet."
He scooped her up into his arms and twirled her once. Setting her down, he grinned. "I can be twice as corny and embarrassing." He eyed her lips. "And sweet."
Sarah beamed, leaning into his chest. "Don't I know it."
They shared a kiss, right there in the field, where any passerby could see them. For the moment, Sarah was the happiest girl alive.
