The name is a spoof of Merv Griffin (it's like a joke), except this mythical beast is a news reporter/newscaster, not a game show founder. And his voice is much different. That is the spoof. But he does more than just talk in a microphone in front of a cameraman. When he is not live, he finds something else to do with his life. And he enjoys life, being the best he can be.
When he is reporting news, he talks about what is going on, what happened, or what is happening, just like any news reporter or newscaster. That is his job. And he gets paid for it.
