Poet of Law, Order, and Respectability
People will sometimes ask why I chose to do The Man Who Was Thursday as my practice graphic story. The answer is this guy. Gabriel Syme is unlike any character I have seen or read about anywhere else. He's cheerfully optimistic, melodramatically heroic, and inappropriately silly and lighthearted in the face of adversity. Part noble knight, part whimsical poet, and part deep philosopher. What is there not to like about him?
The proportions are all off on this picture, but I think it captures the general essence of the character well enough. It's so hard to draw him serious because he so rarely is.
This was more Sai practice, of course. Scanned in ink picture and colored up digitally. Didn't do anything fancy with this one, but I liked the sketch enough to want to color it.

agreed bout Syme's character. I actually bought the book, read it, and read it another four times, thanks to your comic... and, I have to say, you do amazingly.... that's exactly like how I'd imagined Syme... Thank you, Gen... It's rare that I find a book that I reread again and again... and, when the graphic novel you're doing is finished... *glee* Though, I'm looking forward to seeing your take on the ending. I really am.
I pondered what species to make the cast for a very long time. Eventually I settled on making Gabriel an Arctic fox because it made for a really nice visual parallel to Lucian's red fox. Plus since Gabriel gets swoony over Lucian's sister making them both foxes worked out. It ended up making Gabriel and Lucian two sides of the same coin in a way, one hot and chaotic while the other poetic and ordered.
Yeah, I'd noticed that, but I wasn't sure if it was intentional... I thought it was, but I assumed it wasn't, simply to be complicated and deny the fact that there was any intentional connection... like my english teachers insist that there are connections in works that.. just don't really make sense.. LOL
but, back to the point, I liked the choice a lot... and, when you think about it, they really are the same coin, in an odd way..

And without the cape, which he left behind in an early chapter of the book. I think what really sets the tenor of Gabriel Syme is the chapter where he's talking with the British Police officer early on.. you get a real sense of Gabriel's moral code & personal conflicts.
Maybe its just me seeing this but I find it interesting that the way you portray one of your favorite book hero reminds me so much of how you portray Uriel. When I first started looking at little tales I thought they where the same person :P.
Now that I think about it I bet its the mu'stash that does that to me.

It's the mustache I suspect. Although I fail sometimes, I try to draw Gabriel physically more wiry and and a bit more pointed than Uriel. Were I to ask him how he compares to the character he'd probably shake his head and say something about how he's no knight or poet. He's also a lot less flamboyant ;)
In the book Gabriel is blonde with a mustache and a small well trimmed beard. My initial design for Uriel did not include his mustache but he poked at me and told me to include it. I think that was the only design suggestion he ever made, so who was I to say no?

I absolutley love your work. Ever since I discoverd your site I have read every single comic you have done to this day. I think My favouret character (aside from Gabriel) from "The man who was Thursday" is Dr Bull. I like him because he's always so cheerful and always smiling, but he can also be serious whe he needs to be, which I like.
