Chapter 36: Presence
“The fire department seem to have contained the blaze and are presently securing neighboring buildings to ensure that they are safe. What our viewers may find more interesting is the amount of police that have started swarming the building that we believe was the epicenter of today’s sudden blaze. Let me see if we can get any answers…”
Skyler wasn’t fully paying attention to the field reporter. Some uptown fire didn’t directly matter to him, but he did want some level of a distraction from his current situation. For the most part he couldn’t complain much of course. The snow leopard girl still snoozing half beside and half on top of him was just about the hottest thing he had ever seen, and he was absolutely certain that he would remember the events of last night for years, if not the rest of his life.
That said, she had nodded off while licking his neck and now was sleeping with her jaw half around his throat. It was only due to the physical exertion of the previous night that he had slept at all, and every time she shifted the motion of her teeth got his heart going nuts all over again. He worried that if she didn’t wake up soon, that he was going to start to like it.
He directed his attention back to the TV, “We’re going to need press to stay back for now, it’s a crime scene.
“Do you suspect arson, Officer…”
“Its Blythe, and… maybe, but…”
“But what? Officer Blythe, was some other crime committed in here? Was the fire to cover it up?”
Skyler didn’t care for the look on the cops face. He was a bulldog and looked as fierce as one would expect. The issue was that most cops would seem annoyed if anything when talking to the press, but this one seemed more concerned than anything. And the police behind them seemed to be bringing out bodies, or something. The things were on stretchers and covered with sheets but didn’t seem large enough to be entire bodies.
“Hey, boss. Corpse wagon here yet.” A different cop called from the background.
“I’m busy. It should be here soon.” Blythe called back trying to get back to the reporter.
“The stiff stackers gunna have a day with this one. Got a circuit board in his head. Least I think it’s a he.”
“Will you STOW IT?! The news is here, dammit”
The reporter sped up, “Did he say a circuit board in his head? This another incident like at medical mechanica? Was it the same perpetrators? Was it…”
“Back off we’ll release a statement later” The camera cut off after Blythe sharted shoving the reporter and her camera man back, then the news switched back to the anchor’s desk.
The next voice Skyler heard caused him to actually jolt in shock, not because it was scare of anything, just that he hadn’t expected a voice to emanate from his neck at the moment, “Did they just say ‘circuit board in his head’” Alethea asked, then after her lover’s startled reaction, ”Ohh sorry”
“Oh it’s” Skyler took a breath, “Its ok… I didn’t know you were up.”
“Just woke up” Alethea licked his neck again sending happy shivers up his body, “but seriously, did they say circuit board in his head?”
“I think so... what does that matter” Skyler knew why it mattered. From what he had gleaned checking the place for explosives, and what Sam had told him over beers, he knew EXACTLY what that meant, and in fact any minute now his realization would result in him losing the happy, I just had sex, mood he was in. He was really starting to regret turning on the news.
“Ok this is going to sound insane” Alethea said, “But I think it might be like. Cyborg zombies, or something, running around.”
Skyler just stared down at her for along moment before replying, “How’d you know that?”
Alethea practically launched up from the bed and came down, hands and knees, over him, hands pinning his shoulders back, “What do you mean, ‘how did I know’? Are you saying you KNOW about them too?”
“Uh. Uh” Skyler stammered, and valiantly, though not entirely successfully, resisted the urge to glance downward. “I- I’m a bomb tech remember. I told you that. They had me at the medical mechanica site to help investigate since it looked like it exploded. How did you know?
“My sister works there, or worked there, before it got knocked over.”
“She ok?”
“Ya just scared and, well this explains things”
“What things? Your sister?” Skyler was confused.
“No. Not my sister. I mean social media. You’ve seen any local stuff?”
Skyler shook his head and Alethea scoffed but sat down on his lower stomach, grabbed her phone off the nightstand and started flicking. “Here look” She showed him her phone and some relevant posts, “People have been feeling like something is wrong for awhile now. All over. Like they are being watched or followed.”
“Ever since the ‘event’?”
“Yes, exactly”
That was an interesting bit of info. Skyler made a mental note to text Nyx about it later, for now his more primitive brain was more focused on the naked girl straddling his midsection.
“Not sure how much we can do about it. I can mention it to someone I know in law enforcement.” Skyler offered, “Other than that, maybe we just… stay inside?”
“Maybe. I gotta call my sister at least”
To Skyler’s dismay she didn’t just call from right where she was, but instead hopped off of him and went to the bathroom to place her call. He sighed with mild dismay that her body was no longer pressed to his and typed out a quick text to Nyx to let her know about Alethea’s theory about people being followed and whatnot. He didn’t get a reply, at least right away so he just lay back to wait for Alethea to come back.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE DIDN’T COME BACK?”
Skyler sat up, if Alethea was going to shout something like that from the bathroom, then something had clearly gone wrong and this date was almost certainly fully over. He rolled out of bed and started feeling around for his underwear. Alethea came out of the bathroom and did the same, dressing herself in a very concerned silence.
“Soooo… ahhh… I suppose I didn’t mean to hear that, but… I suppose I should leave for now right?” Skyler asked.
“Maybe, but… no. no no wait” Alethea turned to him, “You have a car right”
“I… do” Skyler said simply not bothering to explain that the car he ‘had’ was borrowed from an FBI agent.
“Can you drive me to my sister’s dorm?” She asked fidgeting with her underwear, “Dammit. And can you help me latch my bra?”
At least that part he was happy to do for her, before the pair finished up and took to the car.
