Among projects for the The Roan RPG Project I was commissioned to help out with, I also made suggestions for the bestiary of the book. Making quite a few based on Danish folklore and the like, cuz, well, I'm Danish and it's fun to ad in something different.
Åmanden in particular is a creepy yet fascinating creature to me. A humanoid said to reside in bodies of water, most typically creeks and rivers. Anywhere unsafe where people have drowned, it was said it was because this creature lived in those waters, waiting for victims to drown and consume. Could be sated by an annual sacrifice, a human life for the "creek man" to feast on and then it would become a safe place to cross. Until it would be time for another sacrifice.
As typical for old folklore, the descriptions of this creature isn't too detailed other than its humanoid and hides in the waters, to drown people.
I liked depictions some people have made of making it creepy and eel like, so that's what I went for.
This is in fact not the original description I provided with the description of the creature when given as suggestion to the bestiary, but a new one I redid years later after inspiration struck to try again. Back when I did the monster suggestions I was at a time where I could only do doodles and sketches to illustrate my suggestions, while the ones that got picked where finished by other artists.
So is just a redo of an old sketch, because I wanted to really do this creature some justice.
Do enjoy!
