The day that she was to leave for the city in the West, the tigress came to her with a cage in hand. Inside of the cage sat serenely a little brown bird.
"What is it?" Fiana asked cautiously. Her tail tip twitched both in curiosity and suspicion.
The cage itself was of an average size, though it seemed miniscule in Reina's claws. The tigress simply held it out, gesturing with her free hand. "A gift," she offered. "For you."
The mare did not move to take it. Instead, she took a small step back, a hand raising to her chest. "Why?"
If she took offense to it, Reina did not show it. Instead, her gift remained outstretched. She took forward the step that Fiana had taken back. "So that you will not be lonely while I am gone. It should be easy enough to care for and it should like you well enough."
Her eyes flicked down to the finch, the creature completely undisturbed by their exchange. Something squeezed in her chest uncomfortably. "Why?" she repeated, unwilling to look up at the face of her companion.
Though the little unicorn could not see it, the tigress's face softened, understanding and tender. "Because you have been alone long enough," she said gently. "If it is too plain, I can get you a bird unlike any other while I am in the city, but until then I would like you to have this."
A patient silence passed between them, broken only by birdsong and the rustling of leaves in the wind. At last, Fiana swallowed thickly and took a step forward. With both hands she took the cage from Reina, holding it up so that she could see the bird. Whatever she examined it for, she found it.
"Thank you," she told her. It was quick and terse, but she could see in the tigress's blue eyes that she knew it to be genuine.
Reina bowed to her in a movement too fluid and graceful for such a warrior, grinning. "It is my greatest pleasure."
A little Fiana between studying. I think she plumps up nicely after marriage.
