Yeah, at this point of the original run of the comic we were still developing what we wanted Sam's role in the story. As we were producing large amounts of comic pages (2x a week for a year) and writing the story as the pages were coming out.
Sam's ire for Kylar isn't just because he's gay, it's just a thing he is narrowing in on so he can "other" Kylar more than he already was. Sam is an incredibly envious character who has a chip on his shoulder. He's doing what he can (aka sucking up) to raise in the ranks because of his own crappy beginnings. He feels Kylar has things too easy and is undeserving of it.
