Knowing what I know now, this picture has a couple of flaws in it. We see a NCO of a Waffen-SS unit directing his troops on the attack. His uniform consists of the "pea" or "dot" camouflage pattern. The pattern, known as "SS-Erbsenmuster" by collectors, was used on this uniform that was to replace the plain green HBT uniform and the myriad number of SS camo smocks. This was a means to simplify the logistics by limiting uniform and camouflage item production to just a few designs. The uniform was ment to be worn over the usual wool blouse and pants but in the summer months, was worn by itself. Troops began to receive the new uniforms in 1944. The cap this NCO wears is wrong. While the SS had camo caps, none were officially made in the SS-Erbsenmuster material. There is only one genuine picture showing a custom, field made cap in SS-Erbsenmuster. The NCO is carrying the MP44, a pivotal weapon that set the standard for assault rifles of all nations after the war but he should be wearing two pouch sets, not the one shown. Apologies for the lousy scan. It was taken from a printout made on a not-so-decent inkjet.
