Compendium entry #CXXIX
After the negligible amount of time in peace, while our colonies continue to thrive under the wing of the empire, conflict once again arises from the wilderness and shows its wretched visage. While we were establishing agriculture, protection and social values to our people, the primitive clans in the southern and eastern regions have spent their time with the villainy to create new, vile methods of warfare to use against themselves and occasionally our outer defences as well.
This entry consists of accounts and witness-testimonies from our colonies and patrols; further investigations through our scouts have been approved.
Alchemists - as we have named them - feature a light resemblance to their shamanic cults with boastful attire, accessories and talismans but at the same time, are fit to tread swiftly and silently, hence their utility as an ambush-unit. Unlike with their pagan relatives, the effectiveness of alchemists is grounded in reality; they have been witnessed to actively attack from afar, using throwable projectiles with various - but always malicious - effect. Some would go up in flames, others explode, causing brutal cuts to unprotected skin, some emit clouds to shroud themselves or leave a substance behind that would turn any stomach and cause sickness within range. The full set of their arsenal has yet to be uncovered so we can prepare proper defensive tactics.
If their equipment should cease, they shan't shy away from close combat as they wield small blades or hatches, making them still a threat at any moment.
Given their weak armour, however, they should not pose a difficult encounter when exposed. Therefore, it is advised to use archers or medium soldiers and eliminate them with high priority.
Their place in a clan's hierarchy has yet to be determined but it is noteworthy that both male and female have been entrusted with this role on the battlefield and given the complicated nature of the school of elements, it is likely, that this class is chosen by intellectual members of their clans without considerable physique or agility.
So far, these alchemists only occurred within stronger groups led by a matriarch but it is to be expected that - with time - their numbers will considerably increase as we have yet to discover the sources of where they obtain their ingredients from.
- Cornelius Lucus, military assistance coordinator of his majesty.
