Jess was a city mouse. She'd spent her whole life as a slave attached to the most famous brothel in Jaspertree. She'd helped many other girls win their freedom and, in most cases, seen them reunited with their families. She'd never dreamed she would be free herself. Her whole world was the city, and the Silver Street House where she lived. There was nowhere else for her to go. It hadn't been all bad. The other girls in the House were friendly enough, and one in particular was like the little sister she'd never had. Jaspertree was tolerable when you knew how it worked, and had the sense to keep off the back streets.
Then rumors of rebellion exploded into open warfare in the streets and Jess found herself thrust into the strange world outside the walls of the city. Her new friends probably meant well, even if they had asked her for things she couldn't deliver. But the first steps toward real freedom were the most frightening of her life.
So here's another picture of Jessamine, this time with a little bit of a teaser for my second novel, tentatively titled The New Girl at Silver Street to keep her company. I think the poor girl could use a friend right about now. I kind of wanted a little something that was appropriate for Halloween, which is why she's lost in the woods here. But it fits well enough into her canon story that I couldn't resist working it in.
Jessie's a mouse/least weasel hybrid, by the way. She normally self-identifies as a mouse, which is why I chose to use that as the Species tag. I'm quite pleased with how well Pie blended the two species together, too.

Awww, she looks all lost and frightened... poor girl! But with a bit of luck, that might just be the woods in which the Temple of Bastet lies, so she might suddenly find herself in a very friendly and warm place
I really like her looks, too! The mixture of her mousie features with that fluffy tail is just lovely! She looks like a very soft and cuddly girl, and in such a lovely color, too! I really hope she will find a bit of happiness and good fortune in her life
[*chuckles* It's weird, too; I've been trying to reply to your response on the picture of Jett, and every time I hit the reply to this post button, I get a sytem message saying FurAffinity is in Read-Only mode. Weird...]

Yeah, she's pretty frightened at the moment. She's spent 33 years in the city where, even if she was miserable, she was at least pretty savvy when it came to how to survive. Now, she's way out of her depth with no clue as to where to go or what to do. But she'll find her feet soon enough, and find out that the comfort of familiar surroundings is nothing compared to being free. *Grins* Who knows? It's always possible she might find her way to the Temple sometime, too. I have a feeling she'd probably enjoy it quite a bit.
And thanks! It took me a long time to finally settle on what she looked like, which is part of why it took me so long to get any art done of her. But I really like her blend of feature. I wanted her mouse ancestry to be pretty dominant, with just enough of the weasel side showing through to make it pretty obvious what she is, and Pie actually captured that really well. She can be very soft and cuddly to the people she likes, too.
(Weird. FA has had a bad habit of sometimes going strange on me, and throwing up a blank page when I click on a link to go to a new page. Well, maybe it will let you respond before too long. And thanks for the comments here!)

Yes, I can certainly imagine that. When you've lived in the concrete jungle all your life, it can be very disheartening and frightening when you suddenly find yourself in a forest full of those weird tree things and bushes and leaves and moss and stuff, and no lamp posts or sidewalks or road signs or anything! The same thing counts for the other way around, actually. But indeed, once you get used to it, and especially when it means total freedom as opposed to being caught in a life you don't want to be in, it's definitely not that bad. *giggles softly* And yes, if she might happen to find the Temple all of a sudden, I have no doubt that she would very much enjoy the warmth and comfort and... everything else that she can find there
You're welcome, too! I think you really managed to find a good balance between her primarily mouse features and partial weasel side; there's just enough weasel to show she has that in her, though she still looks mainly like a mouse. TechnicolorPie certainly did a very good job at capturing your ideas in a picture

Yeah, I can imagine that fear would be one of those emotions that would be hard to show accurately, without going overboard with it, or softening it so much it isn't convincing. But I thought Pie did a wonderful job of capturing just the sort of fear I had in mind. As for her collar, technically, it should protect her anywhere she goes. Her home city is one of the biggest and most powerful in the world and it has no qualms about using its military strength to protect its possessions. But because Jess was stolen out of the city, she's broken the law and that means she is beyond anyone's protection. She won't remove the collar unless she's physically forced to. She's simply worn it too long and the psychological comfort it gives her is greater than her common sense. But now it just puts her into even more danger, and she knows that.
Anyway, long winded explanations aside, I'm glad you like this. *Grins* And I have a feeling Jessie would be flattered by being called cute. I don't think anybody else has said she was ever before!

Aw, well thanks. And the explanation was my pleasure. I haven't said too much about her or her world, because I don't want to spoil the plot of the book, but things like that are details I don't mind making clearer in advance. Her relationship to her collar was actually one of the very first details I worked out about her, too.
