I believe the former to be true, as one hobbyist here in the aloha state ran into round rubber thing troubles when it turns out, the older style of XLB weren't genuine Michelins...but knock offs...as he put it "ripping them off the rims with displeasure revealed shoddy sidewalls and beads that could have easily burst if ran under-inflated as per off roading protocol" on his Volvo TGB.

The later I'd like to believe even more because I wouldn't put it past Syliva and Nora to treat them round rubber things as chew toys as well as helping the effort by doing so.
