Chapter 37: Meeting
When Alethea and Skyler arrived at Atasi’s dorm room it was clear that she had been in a bit of a tizzy for a while. She had clearly been pacing all morning not even bothering to fully control her claws, at least judging from the fraying of the carpet. She looked like she hadn’t slept well, hadn’t brushed her hair, and one other thing.
“Gun!” Skyler announced mere moments after the door opened, then grabbed and pulled Alethea back into the hallway.
“Oh.. shit sorry” Atasi said putting down the pistol she had been gripping and waving around as she paced, “Uh.. its down now.”
Alethea wormed her way out of Skyler’s arms and rushed back into the room with him following, “Sis. What happened. I wasn’t exactly expecting you to be waving a gun about. Or even having one.”
“Right. Sorry. I just... When she didn’t come back I got nervous so I have just been holding onto it, just in…” Atasi trailed off, “Who is this?”
“Oh this is Skyler, I met him last night”
“Uh ya” Skyler nervously confirmed, “we .. er that is to say. I was spending time with her when you called and…”
Atasi held up a hand, “I get the picture, don’t want to hear more. Thanks for bringing my sister over, but I don’t’ think this is a problem for anyone else.”
“I understand I’ll just…” He was quickly silenced by a clawed finger against his nose.
“Hold on you” Alethea said then turning back to her sister, “Sis, he knows about the demon robot monsters.”
“How?”
After a short discussion catching Atasi up on who Skyler was, the pair found themselves sitting around a cheap folding table with the gun in the center.
Skyler cleared his throat “So that’s me, but… I’m told you were IN the medical mechanica building during the… event”
Atasi nodded
“You survived that… how? and how come I didn’t see the cops interviewing you? Given that almost no one survived I figure I wouldn’t have missed you.”
“Well I didn’t exactly leave… via the usual means”
“What does that mean?” Skyler raised an eyebrow.
Atasi glanced over at Alethea and only after getting a reassuring nod did she actually respond, “This is going to sound insane, but an angel carried me. Through the air.”
Skyler froze for a moment. It would have sounded insane if his friend Sam hadn’t insisted on seeing the angel himself. Actually, it sounded pretty insane anyway, but he HAD seen the cyber monsters and Nyx had been convincing, not the least of which was when she attacked an invisible person.
“Is she.. the angel I mean. Normally invisible? but you can see her with special goggles, and she has a shapeshifting sword that’s also invisible?
Atasi took a good few seconds to relocate her lower jaw, but once she did she reached across the table and half picked Skyler up by his shirt, almost popping the buttons, “How in the HELL, do you know that?”
“I uh.. I have a friend. Sam. He was a guard at the facility. He said he saw the Angel himself. That and…”
“And?”
“And I was helping a fed investigate what happened, and I… I didn’t see the angel myself but I did see… uh… Nothing… that left footprints.” Skyler decided to stop the explanation there omitting the bit where Nyx attacked the invisible person and stole a handful of feathers.
“That, might have been her” Atasi let go and sad back down, “So you’re on our side then?”
“Side of what? Not getting attacked by zombies? I think most people are on that side”
Alethea chimed in, “As opposed to being on the side of kidnapping celestial beings for science experiments, and or just brushing all this off as ‘insane’ I guess”
“Well I’m not going to do that” Skyler said, “Though speaking of ‘insane’, Atasi, Your company is… sorta at the center of this right? How did that even happen?”
Atasi sighed, “Well… The angel thinks like, the … bodies… we used housed spirits that opened the gates to hell”
“…excuse me?”
“I don’t know exactly how it works, but there was a portal of some sort in the basement. I didn’t know about it and I… don’t think anyone else did either.”
“You don’t ‘think’ anyone else knew about it?”
Atasi looked down, “Shortly before… things… when insane. My boss was acting weird. Like, she was angry, almost got violent with me before backing off.”
“Sis!” Alethea hugged her sister, “How come you didn’t mention that before?!”
“I don’t think she would have done the demon thing. She wanted a new body, and we built one. We transferred her into it just fine too and she was normal. At least at first.”
“Wait. So…” Skyler leaned back and pinched his forehead, “Setting aside for a moment the fact that you just casually mentioned transferring people’s minds around. I thought that the CEO. Victoria Edwards, was listed as dead… but the cops don’t know about the… new body thing”
“If they found her old one… Shit” Atasi pulled out her phone and started scrolling, “Has she been fine all this time?”
Skyler looked at the image shown to him when Atasi was done scrolling. It looked alarmingly like a robot dinosaur with a screen for a face, “Wow that her? Sorry I don’t think I’ve seen that. Does that mean your boss is still alive?”
“She might be... she might be able to help us too if we can somehow find her.”
Alethea chimed in again, “Or she’s decidedly NOT on our side, and is possessed by the demons and THAT’S why they don’t have a body, and why we haven’t heard from her”
Atasi winced at the thought, “I hope she’s fine. But… what do we even do now? Kate… er.. the angel rather. Hasn’t come back and you saw the news right.”
They both nodded.
“I think she found the apartment somehow. They are saying there was a big fight of some sort, and I haven’t heard a peep from her.”
The trio flicked the news back on for any updates. The building wasn’t burning anymore and it looked like they were starting to bring out bodies. The news crawl however mentioned that one survivor had been found and quickly taken to the hospital, but their family checked them out overnight. The survivor’s name unfortunately wasn’t mentioned either.
“The cops will have talked to whoever that was” Skyler asserted, “And we have to talk to the cops too”
“Why?” Atasi asked, “They don’t know what’s up either, and they’ll think we’re nuts”
“With cyber zombie bodies on hand even the cops need to take you at least a bit seriously.” Skyler said, “Not to mention I think you might be dead. Or declared dead. At the very least they don’t know you are around; we should at least fix that”
Atasi nodded and Skyler took out his phone. He briefly paused over the icon for Sam. His friends hadn’t been responding which was concerning. Shaking it off though he instead pressed the icon for Nyx.
