It wasn't too suspicious when the tributes and feasts were being provided more often by the local town. I mean...dragons are dragons, right? But it's when this big fella decided to try and leave the cave he found some issues...namely the cave had definitely most assuredly shrunk. And an opportunistic kobold has been selling tickets to see and feed the dragon "larder". There are worse problems to have.
