After the death of Saint Pireus at the claws of his eldritch god, the ground rent apart at the seams for seven miles around. Massive vanometric fluxes destroy technology and disrupt psychic powers; somehow a Nevadari monastery exists deep in the rifts between glaciers, hidden from orbital view.
Some former followers of the dead Saint make pilgrimages to the glacier. Many never return, either lynched by a mob in the nearby spaceport or killed in the icy wastes, never to be recovered.

Many furs in the local settlement remember the final battle for Dome 49 - the slaughter prevented by one businessman who begged for mercy at the cost of his own life and freedom; how they were led outside the city by an alien presence in their minds and watched Order be restored by that Thing Under the Stars.
