What will await him ashore, in a new country, far away from the life he knows. He looks forward to finding out...
Without a penny to his name and some scant few belongings, there is not much he can do once he lands, but he hears the mainland is full of opurtunities...

How about a sailor? Plenty of opportunities to assist with trade on the river and sea routes.
He could start as a cabin boy, but work his way up the ranks.
