For a long time, girls used to drop their handkerchiefs when they walked by a fella as a means of sparking conversation when he picked it up for her. It was a nice, clean way for a guy to know if a girl found him interesting, removing all the questions and self-doubt which otherwise crippled a boy's decision to approach. I wish the custom had still been in play during my high school years. How many potential dates did guys like me miss out on because we had no such indication that it was okay to ask? I guess boldness has it's advantages, but at least with a dropped hanky it was clear that a girl wouldn't just turn away if you walked over. Clear communication is vital to the human experience, and sometime around the 1970's that simply fell out of favor. How sad.
