Here's another shot of the bench, this time highlighting the joint at the corner.
When designing the bench I couldn't stand the idea of covering the joint, given then it really becomes the one semi-decorative aspect of the design. In response to that I simply made the cushion wrap around the top and lined it's sides up with the inside of the legs. This also simplified the overall forms of the bench, lending it the more minimalist and modern aesthetic I was after.
The wood is white oak, with a light stain to make sure it would more closely match the piano it was made for. As it darkens with age, it should match the piano's finish better and better. Usually I hate using stains, as I really feel that wood looks best when allowed to stand on it's own with a natural finish, but I'm actually really pleased with how this turned out.
Also really pleasing to me is how much darker the end-grain is from soaking up more stain, and how much it makes the design of the joint pop out.
