Beren wasn't always Beren, but a simple-minded beast that wandered from place to place.
He had known peace then. There had been no expectations granted to him, until he had been taken in by a kindly mage that also meandered from spot to spot as if unable to sit still. Through the mage's experimentations, Beren had gained sentience and eventually began apprenticing under her, learning the art of warding as well as giving himself additional enhancements to become bigger, stronger and more dangerous than everyone else that would threaten them. When he had finally mastered all he could know, he had crafted himself the magical armor he now wore, picking up blacksmithing through the many tomes in her cottage.
For a while, they were happy and comfortable, and Beren continued to follow the mage across planes. Of course, his life was longer than his companion's, and when Sefan, the mage, had deigned to retire at last, she had explained to Beren her true purpose in bringing him to her: because he was one of the last planetouched beasts on her realm, beasts that could withstand going from plane to plane without massive magical backlash and fatigue. She also revealed that the creatures they had sought to deal with as mercenaries were also similar to him, creatures who could traverse planes...but with the corruption that had seeped into their world and the otherwise simplistic nature of the beasts, they had gone berserk and became beyond the control of mages like her, and hunters like him.
Beren allowed his friend rest and once again took his blade, heading out into the next rift. He knew now that he couldn't rest until all those who resembled him had been destroyed...but what would Sefan do to him, when his job had been completed?
