From our 2007 "Marsha's Historical Treats" calendar: this art was for "Spiced Cakes," a sweetened yeast bread that became popular near the end of the 16th century in England. It became so popular that Spiced Cake began to outsell the town of York's venerable York Mayne Bread. This happening alarmed the city aldermen, so they passed laws and levied fines to forbid the baking of Spice Cakes.
