Alzer Darkleaf began life as the squire of the wood elf monk Aldreth Darkleaf, who cared for him as if he was his own son. They travelled in the name of the Order of the Twilight Shroud, an unique discipline that centered upon the understanding of emptiness within form, and it was also during that period that both he and Aldreth had escaped a horrific assault upon their hometown, replacing all of Aldreth's colleagues with mindflayers and having his senior replaced by the oni Kaiden.

Like his father, Alzer venerated Kelemvor, the god of death and safe passage. Unaware of the attack on the temple, he had unwittingly consented to a rogue group of Gondian priests who had arrived to assist the monks in repelling these forces, and the next thing Alzer knew was being bonded to a suit of armor that not only granted him flight but also the power to generate sonic blasts and magical grenades to hurl from a distance for explosive force damage. What he hadn't been aware of was that the priests had been already exposed to the whispers of the Abyss as well, and had fallen to the same mindflayer forces by that point. Horrified and disgusted by his transformation, Alzer dispatched of those who had augmented him and escaped towards the Sword Coast instead, protecting himself from the automatons sent to hunt him down.

Unable to return to his father or siblings, Alzer became a sellsword across Faerun instead, using the suit to destroy aberrations and gather more information about saving his family. What he hadn't known was that his two siblings too had set off for a similar quest...but their paths would eventually converge, and allow Alzer to finally return home.
