Fall, 1343
A day after getting the summons Meratezatgh flew back to the Dragonstone. The Lord of the Southern Ranges had briefly considered bringing along the scale mail armor the Normad king had gifted him, but ultimately decided against it. The armor was heavy, and not very maneuverable in. Besides, his subordinates would not respect their Dragon Lord arriving donned in human armor, nor would his fellow commanders. He had enough trouble as it was with his reputation of being human-friendly.
After three days of flight, Mera found himself back at the Dragonstone, along with the other five dragon lords, Rheiserrst, Teraphstha, Gherlaistts, Ewarerfise, and Safajae. The others simply nodded at Mera’s arrival. They knew he was special after rescuing the Jutrstra. Soon Argvogriyea appeared before them, regal and domineering as ever, ascending the Dragonstone itself to speak.
*I welcome you all again before our sacred hearth to discuss matters threatening the Children of the Sky.* She gave a quick smile to Mera, before continuing. *It is my duty to state that our people are at war with the gryphons again.*
The dragon lords grumbled.
*The previous fighting was only a dozen years ago.*
*Why are we at war again?* Mera asked.
Gherlaistts snorted. *You can’t trust the feathered ones.*
*They’ve bled in the last war as well.* The bronze dragon persisted. *How did this start?*
Argvogriyea looked over Mera as if evaluating him before explaining. *A week ago, a half dozen Children of the Sky abandoned the Coyote Wall after humans began settling and building farms atop the escarpment. They decided to move to Compton’s Cove, but ran into several gryphon aviaries. There were fights and the raids and counterraids have gotten larger. Many dragons have fallen to the feathered ones. Our enemies are now gathering their numbers for a full attack against our people, so we must do the same to face them.* The Jutrstra slammed her staff atop the Dragonstone and looked over her commanders.
*Call up your warriors. We must be ready for the confrontation with our full strength.*
The Dragon Lords bowed. *Agreed my Jutrstra.*
Argvogriyea nodded. *Before we finish, my scouts have provided a warning: there is a dangerous new unit as well. The Gryphons of the Ironwood Flight have learned the ability to wear armored skins and wield spears with three-pronged spikes like the humans. A dozen dragons have already fallen to them.*
*How did they acquire metal skins and metal claws?* Teraphstha asked.
The golden one shook her head. *The stone people. They sold it to the feathered ones. They knew the gryphons would use it against us.*
*Bah! It’s all just rumors.* Ewarerfise interrupted. *Even the bird brains wouldn’t stoop to dressing like the humans they are thrall to.*
Mera flinched. Noticing Rheiserrst turned to the bronze dragon. *You know the humans best Meratezatgh. What can you tell us about these skins?*
The Lord of the Southern Ranges shied away slightly as the Jutrstra and all the Dragon Lords stared at him, before he managed to recover his courage a bit, finally asking. *What do these skins look like?*
*My scouts tell me that a smooth silver cap covers the top of their heads with holes for eyes. A thick line of scales, like a snake runs down their neck to their chest. Their abdomen and sides have a checkerboard of red and yellow.* Argvogriyea replied.
*That’s scale mail.* Mera explained. *The helm atop their head and the plates on their chest are probably made of steel. It’s impossible to attack those areas-they can’t be to cut through and will damage teeth if bit. The checkerboard cloth is likely a thick caparison, which while weaker than the metal will still block casual slashes and could tangle up claws. In all, these gryphons will be difficult to harm. Wings and belly are your best bet.* He thought a bit more. *The ranseurs are dangerous. It can cut through our scales.* Then a new thought: *This equipment costs a fortune! And the Duregaren gave them to the gryphons?*
*They want us to kill each other.* Safajae dryly stated.
The assembly of Dragon Lords fell silent.
*What can we do?*
*We have to face them.*
*We will do as you requested my Jutrstra.* Rheiserrst declared, while the others nodded. *We will fight for our people. We will fight for our old ways.*
Argvogriyea responded by slamming her staff again upon the Dragonstone. *We cannot avoid this fight, so let our strength and valor and the will of the heavens decide. Summon your hosts!*
