Commonly found throughout Germany, Belgium, France, Czechia, Poland and Austria, the Elend Kobold (Alternatively transcribed as Elendkobold or Elend-Kobold) is a small offshoot of the Gremlin species that specializes in one thing, and one thing only: Harassment via psychic impression. They require constant psychic energy to sustain themselves, and specifically prefer the psychic energy generated by long-term anxiety. It is for this reason they are frequently found in hospitals, prisons, tax offices and other places where people commonly experience anxiety. They have also been found aboard mass transit and in elevator rooms.
They hide themselves quite deviously, generating a low-level psychic field that masks them from the naked eye. They "suggest" that people not notice them, and as such only particularly sensitive or observant individuals ever see them directly, unless under circumstances where the creature is incapacitated.
The constantly generate a field of psychic energy that, according to S.3.R.A. research, brings someone's worst concerns to the front of their mind. On top of that, they are still kin to Gremlins, and can sabotage machinery, hide important items or otherwise cause additional stress. This, coupled with their "invisibility" and habit of staring at people for prolonged periods of time, all culminate in an oppressive feeling of being watched and tampered with, leading to even greater anxiety.
Their favorite targets are the sick, elderly and very young, and Elend Kobolds have been identified in children's hospitals plagued by "monsters under the bed". Their intellectual status is currently up for debate, as they are either unwilling or incapable of verbal communication and seem to have no culture beyond gathering together to feed. As such, S.3.R.A. regulations are capture, spay or neuter, and tag for long-term tracking and study. Problem infestations, I.E. those that have caused suicides through anxiety, are usually handled via euthanasia by toxic gas.
Wow guys, I know I have a bit of a back log - but I hadn't realized I NEVER posted this thing, so it's been gathering dust for nearly 4 years!
IamGhostDivision doodled this up in one of his art streams while we were goofing off and I said something about "being infested with Anxiety Gremlins" or something... And then, after more communication with my creative/life partner, :JosephH:, we had a whole new creature for the Feltonverse that I both love and hate, given what this cute, manic little ass represents.
It's so flippin' harmless and doesn't seem like it should be a bother - but that's how the things that trigger are anxieties usually operate, isn't it? Little things that, on their own don't inherently mean much, can trigger us, bring stress, create tics, impact our mood and drives us to respond in unproductive, sometimes destructive (to ourselves or others) behaviors... That's partially why I'm glad that this was made - to give anxiety a "face" that can make it approachable, and a little less threatening. Maybe it'll do that for someone else, too.
