Inspired by the homes of a tribe living on an island off the coast of Taiwan. Can't find much info on the practical reasons such unusual subterranean homes were built sunk in a rocky hole. But in my fiction it has to do with escaping the heat of the island, being cooled by the earth and stone surrounding them. With the secondary purpose of protecting the relatively fragile wooden homes from frequent hurricanes. Elsewhere, in colder regions, Foxes would build warmer dugout homes, rather than pit houses. As is the case with historical human societies the type and style of house would depend upon culture and region.

I actually seen bushcrafting videos that show this technique. Now I have a thought given the name Foxholes used in world war 1 and 2 and an idea comes to mind that during some sort war happened and the idea of building a barracks in these trenches proved useful as a means of giving the men (Foxes) relative safety and a breif respite to rest. The building method was not forgotten and was later improved upon in mountainous areas which had far better drainage and securer foundations using concrete or stone. This would also be used as a military design.
