Chocolate happens to be lethal to both canines and avians (along with most mammals apparently). Cocoa contains "theobromine" which most animals cannot metabolize, so it builds up in their bodies and becomes very toxic. We're apparently one of the lucky few species that can metabolize it. Caffeine is a similar story
