The endless night was awash in a light mist, lit into a bright, ambient glow by the pale orange moon above. If one looked hard enough, visions could be glimpsed within the subtle swirls and curves of the fog at play. Conquests of heroes past, scenes of the rise and fall of a kingdom, monsters famed to this very day, even fragments of one's own childhood. It inspired wonder and a yearning for more. Yet, the more one studied these visions, the more fleeting and sporadic they became; as if the scenes denied mortal eyes, unless they presented themselves on their own terms.
And then the mists parted, carving a distinct but winding woodland path. Those who knew the foliage would recognize the unique brambles and shrubbery of the most northern reaches of the Glimheart. But of course, few who saw this sight were so keen.
Following the path ahead, one would soon come before a glorious, man-sized cat; short, salted brown hair set ashimmer from the wispy halo behind its ears. It sat coyly on its haunches, glowing golden eyes fixed on its observer.
"Welcome [name], to my abode. I am the Fablemancer, and I have chosen you to be my herald. But I do not force this choice upon you. Linger or leave as you will."
The celestial feline strode forward, bowing its head so its observer may choose to pet it if they wished. But of course no observer would refuse. The cat received its pets for a time before standing tall and proud, and then circling playfully around its chosen.
"If you desire, you will serve me faithfully, and your service will be rewarded with the secrets of olde."
The cat vanished, only to reappear where it originally sat. It's eyes shined down upon its observer.
"[Name], will you serve me?"
A wise observer would be skeptical. But this was not a wise observer. No, indeed, the choice was made as expected. Every time, without fail. For the observer was chosen from amongst all mortals for their likelihood to accept such a fanciful and spontaneous proposition. ..As well as their likelihood to thereafter provide amusement.
"Good," the cat purred. "Wake now, and revel in my gifts. Find me, serve me, and all your hearts desires will take shape."
When the observer woke, they did indeed hold the essence of magic within them.
Each and every observer.
Sparse and select individuals from all across the lands.
Just seeds now perhaps, but soon the garden would grow.
