Yr'ael often looks calm, but it's mostly because his dragon face doesn't really allow for expressions. It is quite frozen, just like he is in general. It gives him this feeling of unwavering judgement, like a deity looking down upon the mortals.
That's the façade he wants everyone to see.
The truth is... all his life he pushed everyone away because he felt different and unfit. He built himself an unbreakable cycle where his loneliness worsens his state, which leads him to rejecting anyone that attempts to help or get closer to him. He uses this shell of "dragon god that sees mortals as lesser beings" because deep inside, he fears of what would happen if someone found the way to his very fragile heart.
He prefers wearing his helmet as a human or stick to his dragon form because it is easier to hide what he truely feels when none can see the face behind the mask.
Weakness became unacceptable.
Yeah, Yr'ael became my most complex character as of late personality-wise. I hope I do it justice. He is a neurodivergent (to be precise, autistic) human given a dragon form, which made him feel even more different than the rest, who were all humans fearing what he was. He suffers from that social isolation but the problem became so widespread that he has a difficult time seeing the root of it. Plus he does not allow anyone to help him. Over time, he created that persona of cold dragon deity like in the legends, but it is as if the people around him had pushed him into that role by acting as if he was one in the first place.
It's honestly a difficult topic to write about and I always fear I do it wrong. I'm meant to write funny fantasy characters, not deep ones with sufferings that lead them to different dark paths...! I read about autism a lot and wanted to do them (and myself, since I'm one) justice.
Also an important detail: he never ever harmed anyone. He promised himself that he'd never hurt. That will make it easy to redeem him should someone manage to help him leave this cycle and find renewal. (I do plan on having a future him where he's a much happier person! I don't wanna leave this big guy in that suffering.)
A big thanks to Takamatsu_kun for this amazing bust! ^^ Which inspired me to write aaaall this!
