Chapter 39: Home Invasion
Atasi fidgeted while her sister’s newest boyfriend talked to, whoever he was talking to. She was a little concerned that this guy was someone she had literally just met and was already ‘in the know’ as it were. Though she did have to admit that getting in contact with the authorities might be necessary now that Kate had failed to return.
“So, how long have you known this guy?” She finally asked her sister.
Alethea shrugged, “At this point a little over 12 hours? I think.”
“Of course” Atasi sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose, “And what’s your take on him?”
“Well he is fun to take…”
“DAMMIT Ale!”
“Fine fine… Just trying to lighten the mood. You do need to relax, no matter what is happening panicking won’t help”
Atasi had to admit there was wisdom in that notion as well.
“I did see his uniform so he’s not lying about being in the military, and he’s NOT a zombie, so that’s a pro” Alethea said, pacing a bit. Then her ears perked up when she heard a knock at the door, “You expecting someone?”
“No” Atasi shook her head then to the door said, “Who’s there!?”
The knocking just continued a bit more insistently.
“Pifft, maybe its your RA” Alethea went over to the door.
As Atasi watched her walk towards the door and reach for the knob, time seemed to slow down. For some reason an eminent feeling of dread began to balloon in her gut. She wasn’t sure why or how, but a part of her imagined that she could actually see what was on the other side of that door before it opened.
She didn’t have time to go to her sister and stop her, and couldn’t even find words to shout out, but she did have time to reach for a pocket just as the partially opened door flew wide with a bang and a pair of damaged hands grabbed at Alethea.
“This the one?” A voice asked, sounding like it came from someone with a severe chest cold. The face was barely visible under the hoodie it was wearing, likely for the best cause the body standing and grabbing was a bit less pretty than it had been not long ago.. Before it got any response from whoever the intruder was talking to, Alethea gave her own answer connecting her shin with its crotch and her fist with its throat. The girl wasn’t large by any stretch of the imagination, but she had hung out in enough bars to have to fend off some unwanted advances from men who weren’t entirely clear what ‘Back the fuck off, jizz brain” meant. Such men were also not super prepared to block punches or kicks, provided one didn’t give them warning.
The creature flinched hard at the blows, harder even than one would expect from the relatively small and slender Alethea, dropping her to the ground in the process. It pulled back and croaked out a high-pitched yelp of pain before doubling over and grabbing at the impacted areas. If Alethea had had time to think about its reaction, she would have thought it strange that she had had as powerful an effect that she had on it, as if it wasn’t especially accustomed to experiencing pain and hadn’t gotten used to the concept yet.
That became moot pretty quickly when a hear splitting bang replaced all noise with a white hiss, followed by another and another, collectively sending the intruder stumbling back before slumping down. Alethea staggered up while Atasi stumbled back from forgetting to brace for the recoil. She stumbled into Skyler who’s phone tumbled to the floor as he reacted in an attempt to catch the falling girl.
“Shit Fuck Shit SHIT FUCK FUCK FUCK!” Atasi mouthed as she was very much back in panic mode. She probably said it too, but hearing wasn’t happening again just yet. Shaking and still holding her gun out at arms length, the upper of the two barrels smoking and the gun shaking like a leaf.
Skyler also mouthed something and helped hold Atasi up. When she wasn’t fully responsive, he grabbed her by the back of her shirt and half dragged her out of the room, pushing Alethea out in the process.
“..to.. out..we… leave. efor…. They corner us again!” He said, hearing returning to the group.
Luckily the hallway was clear, at least for the moment. The group glanced up and down the narrow hall. There were stairwells on either end, and elevators in the middle. Noises could be heard from the other rooms as their occupants reacted to gun shots in the dormitory.
Alethea touched the opposite wall, where two of the three bullets had made holes in it. Either they had passed through or Atasi had missed. “Good thing the rooms are staggered.”
“I fucking killed him” Atasi said.
“Hey, we gotta move. I doubt there’s just the one.” Skyler said.
“I fucking killed him”
“Closest stairs are this way” he continued.
“I fucking killed him”
“Yes now MOVE” He shoved Atasi forward and followed as she started to stumble toward the nearest end of the building. Alethea came up behind them. Curious heads were starting to poke out from the various dorm rooms on this level. Probably other levels too, but they weren’t the main concern. The pair of hooded figures that came OUT of said stairwell door heading their direction were much more concerning.
Atasi screamed and loosed another trio of wild shots in the vague direction of the figures. Both shots appeared to hit nothing, but did have the effect of causing the curious heads to shoot back into their rooms immediately.
“Other way!” Alethea said grabbing her sister and trying to reverse momentum back down the hall in the other direction. The pair of figures sprinted after them, one after the other as it was almost impossible to run side by side in the narrow hall.
“They’re gaining!” Skyler called out, “Gimmie the gun!”
“W-what?” Atasi managed to stammer. Foot steps behind them getting louder as they ran.
Skyler glanced over his shoulder, “SHIT!. Uh. Uh. Now now! Gimmie the gun right now!”
He half pried the pistol out of Atasi’s hand, before snapping it around and loosing a shot into the closer pursuer’s face. Basic training did involve a bit more firearms instruction than Atasi had had on her one day at the range and the pursuer’s nose appeared to vanish backwards into their head before they fell hard. The second pursuer didn’t’ react in time and tripped hard over their buddy’s body and slammed into the floor.
“Ha. Got him. Hey why does this gun have two barrels?” Skyler asked, though neither girl was particularly interested in responding right now. From what he could tell there was a button on the side that triggered whatever was in the lower barrel to fire. Similar to a grenade tube on a rifle but far smaller, but he would figure that out later. With the pursuers either dead or faceplanted they were able to gain a decent lead and burst through the door to the opposite stairway.
Alethea was in the lead and soon found herself face planted into the chest of someone who seemed like they were wearing medieval knight armor. She would have pulled back but an arm wrapped around her back. An almost impossibly strong one that pressed her tight till she wondered if her ribs might start to break.
Atasi and Skyler skidded to a stop behind her and looked up at the large, mostly metal, thing before them.
Atasi sputtered, “V-V-Victoria?”
