Edit to explain the potential plot hole: Why didn't Darius nor his men eat Dover after initially killing the latter with a spell? This is actually understandable because Darius had his meal of human flesh and organs (gross as that sounds) and he and his men may've eaten a few others, too, before their encounter with Dover. It's easy to assume that they just wanted to share some fresh human cadaver to scavengers.
Chapter 3
The forest at night is quite a peaceful scene, what with fireflies floating around and crickets chirping. The area partially lit by moonlight, giving it a serene atmosphere.
Dover, having died a bloodless death in the cruel hands of Father Darius, is lying on his back on the ground with his cane-sword next to him. He hasn’t opened his eyes or moved an inch for hours since his incident with the cult and he is destined to be devoured by wild predators and rot. And worst yet, his fellow Scotsmen would surely mourn over his death when they see his corpse.
Just then, a unicorn, a mythical creature told in stories, appeared as if out of nowhere and walked out of the bushes. The creature slowly approaches Dover with caution and stared at him for a bit with a sad expression on its gentle visage. It then lowered its head and touched him with its horn infused with benevolent magic.
Its magic, consisting of white and blue lights, flowed within and around the Scotsman. Then the unicorn noticed a great miracle that happened: Dover’s fingers moved a bit as he grunted.
He’s brought back to life!
Dover slowly got up in a sitting position and looks around until he noticed the unicorn next to him.
“I assume you revived me?” he asked the creature.
The unicorn nodded yes at him before walking off. Dover was about to talk to it, but it’s gone now.
“How could this be, that Darius took my life, only for the unicorn to resurrect me?”
Dover was a bit confused about this situation, until he heard a familiar voice call out to him.
“Dover! Where are you, Dover?”
The Scotsman looked behind him. It was Callum, who was looking for him since the Satanist attack.
“Callum, is that you I’m hearing?” Dover responded.
Callum rushed over to his leader, relieved. “Oh, Dover! Thank goodness you’re alright. Where have you been all day since you’ve dealt with those horrible Satanists?”
“I was brought to the church where their leader, Father Darius, resides,” Dover explains, “That monstrous warlock took my life with his dark magic. And now I was somehow brought back to life by an innocent unicorn and here I am now... with you, Callum.”
“But what about the missing man? Is he...?”
Dover looks down on the ground with a bleak expression.
“Dover?” Callum began before receiving the bad news.
“He’s dead,” Dover responded, “The Satanists killed him and Darius consumed his remains for their demonic sacrifice. It was a horrible sight for me to bear.”
What Dover said means what he and Callum did: they’ve failed their rescue mission. They couldn’t save the man who went missing and ended up be offered as a sacrifice for the Devil. They would have to inform their clan chief about the terrible news.
For two hours straight, the two men somberly made their way back to the clan settlement for a much-deserved rest.
-The next morning, they reported to the clan’s chief, McAlister, about what happened to the missing man as well as Dover’s encounter with Darius and the unicorn.
“I’m quite saddened to hear what has happened to that man and most of your men, Dover,” McAlister sighed, “Darius and his followers have claimed yet another victim for the sacrifice. But at least it’s good to know that the two of you made it back alive.”
“Not to mention I would be dead forever if it weren’t for that unicorn,” Dover added in.
“That’s right,” the grizzled man replied as he breathed in smoke from his pipe before blowing it out, “Methinks that unicorn could be of great help to you two if you were to find it again. It may not be a human being like all of us, but it’s more than just an ordinary animal.”
“But unicorns are quite elusive creatures, aren’t they?” Callum asked, “How can we ever encounter it again?”
McAlister gestured a “wait a moment” at Callum while taking a puff of his pipe again before replying, “Sometimes, you just need some patience to meet that unicorn. It does take time for it to get used to people these days, after all. The creature’s quite a shy one.”
“We’ll do our best to find it, McAlister,” Dover muttered, “If we gain trust from that unicorn, it will assist us in our future missions as well as dealing with the cult.”
The kind, old man nodded with approval to Dover, “Very well, Dover. You and Callum go find the unicorn responsible for your resurrection and your journey would be better than before.”
With that being said, Dover and Callum departed on horseback as other clan members and their families waved farewell to them. The two men have begun their new mission: find the unicorn to assist them on their quest.
