Vroeg was the first character I invented when I started writing these stories based on the universe created by Australians Bernard Doove and Bob Reijns. Skunktaurs were invented by Reijns to be exact, but within the temporal and spatial context conceived by Doove.
Vroeg Skunktaur was born on September 12, 2257, in the Earth calendar. In Chakona time, this date corresponds to week 28 of the year 27. Hy belongs to the third generation of skunktaurs born after his liberation, the year 2223. Hy is a character who is 100 years old when hy meets Esteban Melinao in Amistad.
In hys youth, hy was a technician who worked on various starships and later as a contractor, hy traveled to many places in space in exploration. In the year 2307, when Vroeg was
50 years old, hy was captured by an illegal slave organization, while the skunktaur was doing his usual work on a distant Federation colony. During the kidnapping, hy was subjected to various chemical experiments to discover the origin of hys telepathic powers (Vroeg belongs to the red paw house). Hy was sedated and kept in suspended animation for months. In that state, hy was artificially inseminated as a female, with genetically modified sperm to produce an even more powerful skunktaur. Upon giving birth, Vroeg awoke from his slumber and was allowed to breast-feed the cub, though hys mind was still sedated by the chemicals used on him. In this way, hy acted drugged, almost like an automaton, which produced an amnesia that made him forget the months of gestation and the kid born to him.
An external incident forced the slavers to free Vroeg and other prisoners, putting them all on a spaceship bound for Chakona. After several months of travel, and abandoned to their fate, they were intercepted by a Federation ship, which rescued them. Vroeg and the rest of the prisoners were in a deplorable state. After being taken to Chakona and recovering, Vroeg reported the kidnapping to the authorities, but as hys mind had been altered by the chemicals, that hy could not remember details of what happened. Hy also did not remember giving birth. Hys case was filed unsolved.
Five years later in 2312, Vroeg met his lifemate Maine Skunktaur. Hy got married and started a family. Three years later, hys first child, Chorre Skunktaur, was born. Then another three years later, his second child, Rena Skunktaur, was born in 2318.
Although the family settled in the city of Amistad, Vroeg continued to work as a contractor, but his trips to space were shorter, as hy wanted to spend more time with his children. In the year 2347, Maine became seriously ill and, despite the efforts made and the advances in medicine, hy died at the age of 75. Since then, Vroeg has withdrawn into himself, becoming a reserved guy. Hy began to lead a solitary life, moving away from his children, who at that time were already adults. Chorre following in his father's footsteps, hy became a highly skilled technician and began to travel the known universe. Rena married another skunktaur from Amistad, starting a family. Holly, Cora and Teo were subsequently born from that union.
Due to the effects of the chemicals and drugs that the slave scientists had used on him, and the depression caused by the loss of Maine, Vroeg began to develop a great capacity for introspection. Hy became interested in existential questions and hys mind gradually managed to access areas of higher consciousness, managing to connect with the wisdom implicit in all of nature. At the same time, he managed to partially develop premonition, telekinesis and astral travel, the last two qualities of the other houses, blue paw and black paw respectively. At that time, hy began to suspect the existence of his first child, the one that hy had when hy was in captivity. The last years of hys life, hy searched for hym but without success. When hys life was coming to an end, at the age of 100, hy met Esteban Melinao one morning, on the Amistad beach, in the terrestrial year of 2357.

I wonder if the drugs used on Vroeg also affected hys lifespan? I'd imagine losing hys lifemate and subsequent depression also affected hys lifespan somewhat.
Chakats live on average of 150 years, I'd assume that Skunktaurs would also live on average that much as well, since they're based off of Chakats.

Yes. I originally thought Vroeg was 150 years old, the age limit for taurs. But, by stretching out the time in the Chakona calendar, it turned out that Vroeg would have to have been born on Earth, before the skunktaur were freed. That means that hy was from the first generations of skunktaur slaves, which is not consistent with his intelligence and wisdom. So, I had to shorten the age by 50 years, so that the events would fit and Vroeg would be a second or third generation skunktaur. Your hypothesis is quite good. What's more, I think that experience of being kidnapped marked his psyche so much that hy lived with a certain level of paranoia at the end of his life. Also, there is one more reason to shorten his age, which will be revealed at the end of the book.
