This is a little followup to my other piece Autumn Wind featuring my dope doe Tacicala.
She stirred awake quickly, almost immediately fully awake and sat up. The air in the tent was slightly damp and chilly, yet there was a fresh breeze pressing itself through the flaps. She slowly looked around, it was already way past dawn. Her nose twitched and soon picked up on the freshness of the oxygen rich air. A bit confunded she rolled up from the blankets she had been resting on, quickly wrapping another one around herself as she pulled the flap open.
The cool wind hit her in the face almost like a bucket of cold water, making her blink before reaching her head out and looking around. It was almost storming outside, the wind howling around the tepees and the trees. Firewood was rolling around, fabrics fluttering and decorations rattling. Pots were knocked over and came rolling. Carefully she crawled out and stood up, the blanket she wore flapped around her legs as if the wind wanted to rip it away from her. She turned into the wind while raising her ears and slowly letting them turn around, listening in. Her green eyes glittered in the sunlight and she took deep breaths, filling her lungs with the fresh air. Her ears picked up the drumming noise of a woodpecker and perked up. She instantly turned around and looked for it, spotting it on a branch high above her own tepee. She smiled, it had been so long since she heard that sound last. She picked up on the steady rhythm and started to stomp her hoof along with it, her hip starting to sway. One by one, tent flaps would be opened and head after head popping out to look, hear and feel. The feathers and ornaments clicked and rattled around their horns and hair, coming together to make a cacaphony of life.
Taci started to hum, making up a greeting to the sun and to greet the new season that had arrived for them this morning. Hopefully this would mean a plentiful harvest with lots of maize and kale. As the next member of her tribe climbed out she bleated to them in a greeting in they nodded in return, picking up on the rhythm and started to stomp their hoof as well. More and more started to come out, joining in with hums, bleats, stomps and clicks. Soon almost the entire tribe stood, turned into the wind, greeting the new season in the most festive way they could. The wind would carry their bleats, barks, stomps and clicks far, spreading the news to the next settlement.
The first of three storms had arrived. Spring was here.
