Chapter 40: Employee Outreach
“Its so lovely to see you again, Atasi run Atasi” The largely, though not entirely, metallic being said, “I think we should probably talk.”
Hearing this thing speak was odd enough, its voice was generated by hidden speakers on its body so wasn’t emanating from its ‘mouth’ as it spoke. The creature looked like a robotic raptor of some kind. Long claws adorned both its hands and feet, a long thick tail hung behind it. Additionally, as its face was essentially a curved computer screen displaying eyes and a mouth, instead of a real face. Its ‘mouth’ didn’t move even a little as it spoke. The effect could be disturbing at the best of times, and it was far from the best of times.
“Atasi we don’t have time, what is that thing!?” Skyler demanded.
“Its... kind of... my boss” Atasi said still staring at Victoria ‘Dr. Frankenstein’ Edwards’ new body.
“What the hell does that even mean!?” Skyler glanced back and the remaining pursuer that had now gotten back up and was coming again. “Shit”
“Stop” The creature holding Alethea said, and the pursuer skidded to a halt immediately, stopping 20 feet or so away from them and staring. For a long moment no one moved or spoke. Skyler holding the gun and glancing back and forth between the two creatures, Alethea squirming in what looked like a tight grip, and Atasi just staring.
The creature broke the ice again, “I have a bit of a proposition don’t listen proposition for you. One I think you may just find agreeable to both no both of us.”
Even in her highly flustered state, Atasi couldn’t possibly miss the unusual affectations in this creature’s speech. It was seeming to glitch out like a record skipping and other audio was being injected into its speech. It was obvious this thing was lying, but she couldn’t make munch sense of the inserted words beyond that.
“Who… Are you?” Atasi said, still breathing a bit hard, but slowly catching her breath.
“What do you mean? I’m Victoria no he’s Victoria Edwards. I think I know my own protégé well enough to know you wouldn’t forget me.”
“I don’t believe you. Let go of my sister, ‘Victoria’” Atasi said calming down enough to start getting mad.
To her surprise the creature acquiesced. It loosened its grip on Alethea enough to let her squirm out, but stepped forward at the same time, more fully blocking the doorway. Alethea scuttled back to rejoin her sister and Skyler, “What the fuck is THAT?” she asked.
“See we can be reasonable about this, can’t we?” the thing asked.
“You’re one of the demons aren’t you?” Atasi snarled, “What did you do with Victoria?”
“Demon is a strong word” The thing said, “I’m just your Boss’s new stole my new partner. And … We, could use your he’ll kill your help.”
Skyler tapped Atasi on the shoulder, “We should not be listening to this thing.”
“Mind your place boy” It snapped in response.
“What the hell do you even want?” Atasi asked, “Why are you coming to me?”
“You built my no my body. You can build more. I really do need to have don’t let him get have more”
Atasi glared at the thing, “I don’t think I’ll be doing anything for you.”
“Oh no?” the thing said stepping forward, “How many bullets does the ears does he have left? Would they even penetrate me?” The projected face started to grin as the thing took a step closer, metal clawed feet tapping on the floor. “You won’t escape me, I’m faster antenna faster than you.”
“I’d die before making more monsters!” Atasi said, asserting more bravery than she felt.
“No. you won’t. Your sister will though, and your friend. They will scream until you help shoot help me.”
Atasi stepped back. She was serious about not helping this thing, but… she didn’t see a way to escape right now and she didn’t think she’d be able to say no while her sister was suffering. She gritted her teeth and tried to think of something. ANYTHING that she could do to get out of this situation and was quickly coming up blank.
Luckily for her Skyler picked up what she hadn’t quick clicked on yet and shoot one of the creatures ears. The ears were logical places to put high bandwidth antennas and the sudden destruction sent huge amounts of garbage date rocketing around the processors of the cyborg body. The effect would only take a moment for the error correction to handle but it was still a moment where the creature appeared to outside observers to have suddenly suffered from some sort of seizure. It froze in place with a shudder, teetering a bit to the side and not seeming to be looking directly at them anymore.
The creature behind them roared and started moving again. Skyler spun and pulled the trigger only to receive a click. The gun evidently only had 8 bullets in it, and he had used the last.
“RUN” He shouted, and the trio pushed passed the stunned, but recovering thing that claimed to be ‘Victoria’ and started flying down the staircase as fast as they could. They had gained a few floors, but their immediate pursuer wasn’t far behind and the earsplitting roar from far above impressed upon them the importance of haste.
They reached the bottom and shoved out the door and out of the building. Skyler looked back to see the zombie pursuer coming down the last flight of steps. He aimed the gun again, and hoping the secondary barrel actually did something, pressed the button on the side. A small projectile flew forth and bonked off their pursuer’s face before the entire bottom of the stairwell turned into a mini sun, blinding white light flashed off just as the door closed.
“I think that was a signal flare” He gasped between breaths.
“What?”
“Never mind, Car is this way.” They sprinted towards where he had parked the car. Skyler fumbling to press the unlock button before they got there. Alethea dove into the passenger’s seat and Atasi took the back. Skyler ran around and pulled open the door. Just as he was getting in he caught sight of a shape flying through the air.
He glanced up and saw the creature they had encountered. It wasn’t so much ‘flying’ as it had decided not to bother with the stairway and had body slammed its way though the window’s several floors up and was currently falling through the debris and broken glass. “Shit shit, fucker took a shortcut” he said jumping in and starting the engine.
They just had to hope that Nyx’s car was faster than the mechanical legs of the demon raptor, ‘thing’ pursuing them.
