Partially inspired by
stellarfalcon's work I felt like seeing if I could draw a character covered in plaster, or some other not-perfectly-smooth material. This needed someone with a good profile that I could draw, and I'm doing so much to poor old Spunky that I turned to Walt Kelly's Pogo instead. Not sure just how he ended up covered in plaster but, you know, this stuff happens.
Afterward I realized what it really needed was that father bug who'd sometimes wander into a scene and explain it all wrong, and then get very huffy about one of the main cast destroying a child's faith in their father when they explained what was going on. So if the bugs seem to be less well-rendered than the main character, that's because they were nearly improvised into the scene.
Also along the way I learn the child bug's name in this run was not consistent. I don't know whether that's because these were supposed to be different children of the same father, or different sets of father and child bugs, or if it was a joke that the kid's name kept varying, or if Walt Kelly just didn't worry about looking up what name he used last time. (He was an advocate for putting out finished yet imperfect work, saying the time spent getting something from 85% to 95% perfect was about as much as you'd need to get a whole other piece up to 85%.) Could also be the joke that the father wasn't good at getting the kid's name right, either, and there's no correcting him.

Yeah. It's been lifesaving advice for me, since I started this attempt at having something to post every day. I'm probably at the point where I learn more doing two or three okay pictures than one great one, and Kelly's advice is reassurance that it's okay to post something when I still notice how many lines don't come close to connecting or how much the paw doesn't make sense.
Certainly know that too; I'd like to do more full-color pictures but those take so much time. ... And, then, what I actually need is to spend more time on the initial sketches and getting the body parts into some reasonable proportions. It'd be all right to post multiple versions of reasonably finished images here (I've been thinking of posting an alternate-color one particularly) but many versions of the scribbles they start from? People would hate me.
