This reminds me of something my ex-girlfriend wrote (none of us are English, so the translation might not be perfect).
A boy walks into a café to be hired as a worker. He is hired, and even manages to get a place to stay, but the next day the police come to the café looking for him. The boy is on his first day of work. He overhears the police talking to the employee at the counter. When the bartender is alarmed to realize that the police are looking for the boy he hired, Álmos disappears and grabs his bag and leaves through the back door. The police notice this and go after him. The back door leads to an alley that opens onto the street. The boy is caught in a fudsta. He is startled, beaten, curled up in a fetal position on the ground. The white lion plush falls out of his bag. The cops laugh, because they know they're dealing with a notorious mutant they have to drag to the research centre. One of them even picks up the little plushie and spits it out. The boy pulls it out of his hand. Or rather, he rips it out, leaving a mane of mane in the policeman's hand. The boy curls up, trembling, and clutches the plushie to him. The wind, from the depths of the alley, blows a larger piece of mane in front of them. The policeman identifies the piece in his hand and the one that the wind has carried to his feet. In the next second, a snarling white lion emerges from behind the boy. Sleepy closes his eyes, not daring to open them. The police draw their guns, but big cat shadows linger on the walls (Skaduwee).
- What the hell?" the men gasp.
- This is really satanic, FUCK OFF!" one of them shouts and finally they all run away. A tear slips from his sleepy eyes, he is so shaken with fear. The white lion gently cuddles up to him and tells him it's all right. The shadow crawling on the wall, forms a black duo in space. The boy, feeling the mischievous fur, slowly opens his eyes. He is startled by the lion next to him and closes his eyes when it speaks.
- Don't be afraid, we will protect you! He identifies the spike in his hand and the fleshly animal. Both are missing that particular piece of whisker from his muzzle, and that piece of mane from his fur.
- Leo?" he asks (Leo is the name of the little white lion's plush).
- No. Mkali. The god of light.
- Mkali..." repeats the boy, amazed. The other marmosets come out of the darkness.
- We have always been with you. You have always looked out for us, as we have looked out for each other. You swore to protect us, we swore to protect you," says Mkali. "But these plushies that have comforted you so far are actually voodoo dolls. They are attached to our bodies.
- The god of darkness has put this curse on us. My brother is Usiku... - an elegant cheetah (Jua) emerges from the darkness. Her spots are a reddish golden brown, unlike the usual black.
- But you took care of the voodoo so we wouldn't get hurt. You were worthy of the task you were assigned. Because we knowingly placed the voodoo on you, knowing you were the right man for the job." explained Mkali.
- However, we discovered your inner strength. The time has come. You are the cheetah deity. You will fight Usiku and thus free us from the curse." said a golden tiger (Sikha).
- We know how you feel, for you carry a great burden on your back. We know that you are considered mad by your own kind. The humans. But I assure you, you are not a bit mad. In fact, you're above them, and that's why they think you are. You are a demigod. You're part of us. "As your deity, it falls to me to tell you that we need your help to break the curse.
- 'No one else can help but the black cheetah...' Jua bowed her head.
