Well they're doing this experiment on an acreage in the countryside on Earth where Mak is like the only Sangheili around, so he doesn't have to worry too much about being shamed by other Sangheili. And he hasn't left the acreage in a while due to his abnormal size, as he fears being stared at a lot by human passerbys.
He is still in contact with his Sangheili friends though on Waypoint or whatever the human or Sangheili version of the internet is. He has only told his most trusted friends about his weight gain, and they are surprised why a Sangheili would want to do that to their body. Their response is along the lines of "whatever floats your boat, man".
