Chapter 41: Chase
Nyx had been expecting another FBI cruiser to show up to pick her up. She had not expected a regular cop car. Further she had not expected to be riding in the back, which in a regular cop car meant there were bars all around her designed to contain the recently arrested. She tried not to think of all the various drug addicts and other near do wells that previously occupied the chair she was in, at least the seats seemed reasonably clean so she was unlikely to catch something from them.
To add to the somewhat undignified position the pair of cops in the front seats had ‘commandeered’ her smartphone for its tracking app and were pursuing her car. At least she knew one of them.
“Yo Blythe” She said, “These sirens ever get on your nerves?”
After a pause the bulldog responded, “You get used to it, you feds don’t got sirens?”
She shrugged, “We do, just don’t use them much. More ‘investigation’ and all that”
Blythe’s partner, a golden yellow furred canine in the passenger seat responded, “Then you leave it up to us folks, to actually do the real work of actually arresting the bad guys, while you sip mimosas on the sidelines.”
Nyx rolled her eyes, “It’s about specialty, we don’t have this” She waved around the mobile cage she was currently in, “This sort of box in our cars. And besides, why not leave actually picking up the perps to the expert ‘retriever’ huh?”
The golden flipped her off but before he could respond Blythe cut in, “Alright simmer down you. We’re getting close but the target is on the move.” He pointed at Nyx’s phone, currently mounted to the cop’s dashboard. There were an unusually large number of little blinking dots on the screen. Some indicated traffic jams, others emergency calls, but the relevant dot representing her unit was indeed moving, and pretty fast too by the look of things.
Nyx braced herself against the bars as Blythe started to use the pursuit driving skills they taught at the police academy. The speed was impressive, the cornering less so as tires screamed around each bend that Blythe made. Nyx had to admit though that they were moving a good clip faster than her own car would have been able to, cop cars were much more purpose built vehicles after all.
“The balls is that?” The partner said, bringing Nyx’s attention away from holding on and back forward. What she saw was her car alright. Though with a significantly more fucked up trunk. Large scratches and gouges were evident all over it. The cause was also eminently obvious, what looked like a shiny metal dinosaur was springing along behind on all fours taking slashes at the car whenever it got close enough to try. Whatever the thing was it was very fast indeed, and Nyx had a good idea who, or more specifically what, was responsible for such a creature.
“Get backup” Nyx shouted, “That thing is probably one of the, uh, one of the ones responsible for the attack” She resisted referring to it as a ‘demon’ to avoid sounding too nuts.”
The partner was on the radio mere moments before blurting out, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN NOONE’S AVAILIABLE?”
Nyx found herself tossed about as Blythe dodge debris. The dinosaur thing had noticed them and had started periodically slashing wing mirrors of cars it ran by and throwing them back at them. “Ugh. How is there no backup?!”
“Apparently there’s been random fires all over the city. Got the police and fire department scrambling.”
That would explain all the dots on her phone, Nyx thought, what she said was, “Well we gotta stop that thing then. You think you can ram it?”
“That’s a person right?” Blythe said, “Perp or no we don’t just ‘run over’ suspects”
“You ever seen a person run like that?!” Nyx pointed as her car narrowly avoided getting T-boned in an intersection and the creature just vaulted over the cross traffic like it was nothing and continued on.
Blythe barely managed to avoid an accident himself the siren and the horn got people’s attention, but didn’t magically make the cars ‘not’ be there anymore, and by the sounds she was hearing it seemed like the cop car was trading paint with other vehicles to try to keep up with this thing.
“Dammit” Blythe swore. Pulling back to a straight-away and laying on the gas. It seemed whoever was in her car had decided to stop making turns and stay straight at least for the moment. “Not sure how to do a ‘PIT’ against … that… but I doubt it will listen to orders, so I’ll give it a go.”
“PULL OVER!” The partner tried any way, using the cruiser’s bullhorn to project his voice forward, “Stop running, now!”
Predictably the creature ignored the orders as Blythe gained ground on the thing as it gained ground on Nyx’s car. It switched from four legs to two and dug its claws into the car trunk and started to drag itself upwards and onto the vehicle. It had just managed to get one of its rear legs onto the bumper when the situation rapidly changed in tone.
First it was the loud report of a gunshot, but one much louder than a handgun, followed by another. Nyx noticed that the blasts were accompanied by large holes being ripped in her trunk as the buckshot tore its way out. The creature was knocked back by the impact and let out a distorted shriek as its claws ripped free from the trunk and sent it falling. It didn’t have far to fall of course, the ground was right there, but it was moving at close to highway speeds, so the impact was less than pretty as sparks flew and the creature started to tumble. Nyx’s destroyed trunk popped open to reveal what looked like a young woman wielding a shotgun, just before Blythe’s cruiser plowed into the tumbling demon.
“SHIT!” Blythe cursed and hit the brakes. The thing was now on their hood, and writhing to regain its footing. When the brakes were hit it started to slide forward, until it dug the claws of its hands into the hood of the car. The creature turned its scratched-up head to look at them. A large black dome of a face with LED simulated facial expressions glared with rage at the cops, a large crack through the lower half of the face started to split wide, opening like a mouth full of sawblade like teeth, and emitting a roar of defiance before the creature started slashing at the windshield.
The windshield was bullet resistant, therefor held its own respectably in that the claws didn’t shatter it in one blow. Each hit though was sending the claws further through it and dangerously close to Blythe’s face.
Blythe tired to shake it off by swerving back and forth, swearing a long string of expletives the whole time. The creature reacted by digging its rear claws into the pavement in an attempt to stop the cop car. It was sort of successful, the claws didn’t fully stop them, but the extra drag, coupled with the weight of the thing on the hood, and the fact that Blythe couldn’t see where he was going anymore resulted in them losing control and smashing headlong into the brick wall of a local shop of some kind.
The car barreled through the outer wall metal crunched as the creature was pinned between car and building and forced through along with the front of the car. Bricks tumbled down pummeling it form above as well as shattering glass and denting metal of the car.
Nyx for her part was glad that her face had flown forward into her arm instead of into the bars of the cage she was in, she could already tell she was going to be sore after this.
