A pair of P-40 Warhawks opens up this series of pictures. One flew during the airshow, demonstrating its prowess in aerobatics (it was a fighter plane, after all).

Tiger teeth on the nose means they belong to the 1 AVG, a group of US-funded mercenaries (aircraft, pilots and ground crew) operating in China against the Japanese, 1940-41. Anybody surprised at the attack on Pearl Harbor?

Yes, they were kitted out with the Flying Tigers logo. You could even buy a shirt with the teeth an eye on them.

What makes things worse is that MacArthur knew what had happened at Hawai'i, and still got mugged in the Philippines.
