In certain incarnations of the Echidna tribes, they can be a very dark people. I took inspiration from those aspects, since cannonically, Knuckles' ancestor was a powerhungry chieftain who sought to use the power of the chaos to win war and destroy potential enemies. In other words, they were ruthless conquerors. Not all, but many were. I decided to use that background in this particular Boom universe, since they never established anything about Knuckles' history in Sonic Boom other than he did originally come from a place called Angel Island, and that's all. The emphasis on the need for perfect warriors willing to do anything, even throw aside their own lives to follow orders and achieve victory, seemed to lend a natural bent toward the angle I took in the story and the idea of taking an advanced civilization that wishes to expand its influence and power, as well as its territory.
