Chapter 42: Counterfeit
There was a long moment where no one moved. The impact had triggered the airbags up front and Nyx was very happy she had braced herself lest she have a face full of steel bars right about now.
Once they had gathered their wits the cops both pulled their guns and stumbled out of the vehicle. Nyx attempted to follow them but had a problem, “SERIOUSLY! You LOCKED IT!?” She shouted upon discovering that the locking back seat designed to hold criminals was in fact locked and she couldn’t get out, and the cops weren’t making any moves to help her either.
Their reasons became clear when something under the rubble started to lift the front of the cruiser and push it back. Nyx clung on to, anything, as the car was shoved hard backwards skidding on its rear bumper, front wheel in the air for a concerning amount of time before it flopped back down. The sound of distorted roaring accented by gunshots soon followed.
Nyx couldn’t really tell what was going on outside, but given that the shooting wasn’t dying down she figures it couldn’t be good. Nyx swore and grabbed at her leg. She needed a way out and absent a key she would have to make one. Large chunks of her new prosthetic melted away and flowed up her hand. She left enough that would, hopefully, support her weight as the rest formed into a medium sized sword, and started stabbing at the door locks.
The shooting had stopped by the time the door gave and Nyx stumbled out, though lack of shooting didn’t mean things had ended well. She staggered to her feet and saw Blythe on the ground 20 feet or so away. It looked like he had been thrown, but at least he was trying to stand up. The other cop was nowhere to be seen.
A thump attracted her attention and she turned to see the creature. It was limping, badly. One of its legs seemed mangled and it was bleeding, or at least leaking, from parts of itself, while other parts just looked scratched like the bullets had been bouncing off of it.
“Well I can relate to the leg” Nyx said, “You finished yet?”
The creature just glared at her and growled loud, baring its claws.
Nyx’s sidearm was in her hands immediately and blasting off rounds. The creature mostly just glared at her, The bullets bouncing off its metal hide or adding a few new cracks to its face, but nothing that seemed to perturb it that much.
“Fuck…”
“They got away…” The voice was a rumble and dripping with barely contained fury, “You interfered…”
“Well that’s part of my job, fucko” Nyx Snapped at the thing. “I’m special agent Nyx of the FBI”
“Lazarus…” The thing said and started for her. Despite its busted leg it was still pretty fast across the ground, expected for one who could run at highway speeds, she supposed.
Nyx dodged to the side and tried to get some distance, while she figured out what to do. She glanced down at her hands, the gold was more malleable and so she willed it into becoming armored gloves for her, while the more ridged and abrasive copper parts grow into long knives in her hands. She borrowed more form her leg to make them as big as she could while still being able to stand.
The creature froze for a long moment staring as she made her weapons. “You aren’t a celestial” It said at last.
“Feeling talkative huh? Demon” Nyx shot back, “Maybe I am a ‘Celestial’ maybe not. Care to explain why you were chasing them, and why you don’t just fuck off back to hell?”
“You are NOT a celestial” It said again, “No counterfeit is keeping me from my new world.”
“This world is occupied.”
The creature roared and lunged. Nyx dodged to the direction of its injured leg and slashed at it. The once-copper proved pretty useful as a weapon as a large gouge was left in the thing’s shoulder. It roared again and swung a wild slash at her. She blocked as best she could, but the impact still sent her reeling and tumbling.
She got to her feet as fast as she could, but it was already on her again. She slashed at its face, taking a chunk of glass out of it, but also took a clawed fist to the gut that sent her flying. Nyx bounced off the back of a van and grabbed at her stomach. She felt wet and glanced down at the wound. It didn’t seem so deep, but it would be a problem before long. She sent the copper blade from her left hand over to her right to join with its pair and melted the gold glove on her left hand to cover the wound and act like a bandage. She knew that the thing would be on her in a moment and now she was down a blade, but the one she had was much longer than before.
When it charged, she dove, throwing herself to the ground under its legs, and swinging hard at the damaged leg. The sword sunk in and tore at pistons and tissues underneath. She gripped her sword hard and pulled it free of the thing’s leg, taking most of what still connected it to its leg with it. Nyx stumbled back to her feet and grinned at the hobbled beast.
“I definitely know what THAT is like” Nyx said, “Not to bad for a ‘counterfeit’ is it you little bitACH….”
The creature had gone back down to all fours, or threes as it were, and Nyx was not ready for its speed launching itself with three legs rather than one and an injured one. Its head had impacted her hard from the charge and sent her sprawling.
“Bitch…. I will get you for that. You are not faster than me.” It picked up a manhole cover out of the road and threw it at Nyx.
Nyx put her hands and blocked the projectile as best she could, but her sword shattered from the impact. The only silver lining being that the momentum was deadened enough that it didn’t break all her ribs when it hit her… only SOME of them.
“Ohh FUCK” Nyx groaned in pain and tried to roll onto her side. The copper was already reforming into a weapon for her but it would NOT be fast enough before the creature got to her. There wasn’t much she could do about it. It was going to get to her for sure this time, she thought of her husband and her daughter, and was just about to start apologizing to them for not coming home when a loud crash and the sound of rending metal snapped her back to reality.
The creature was gone, well it was moved 50 feet over as the thing had been rammed by her car. The driver had come back, plowed into the demon and ran it down. The car even rolled over the thing entirely ending up on the other side of it. It went momentarily airborne ramping over the demon’s body, before coming down hard and rolling onto its side.
Nyx got to her feet, tears streaming down her face from the pain of moving with broken ribs, but she got up. The sword reformed in her hand, and she got ready to fight. The demon was still moving as well though much MUCH less freely. In fact it looked like it couldn’t even stand much anymore. It was dragging itself along by one of its arms and the less damaged leg while rapidly leaking some sort of fluid.
It took a moment to realize that Lazarus wasn’t going for her but was heading for the open manhole who’s cover was thrown at her a moment ago.
“Oh you Bloody coward!” She screamed at it and started towards it. Much slower than she normally would have been without the ribs issue, and to slow to stop it from reached and falling down the hole. Nyx cursed. There was no way she could follow it down there in her current state. It would be suicide. Instead, she stumbled over to Blythe.
“You dead?” She asked falling to her knees next to him.
“Just a hole in my stomach….”
“Here” Nyx dropped her sword then put her hand over the wound and flowed the gold glove over it like she did with her own injury. Blythe’s eyes went wide as he saw Nyx’s hand go from invisible to visible before the ‘nothing’ plastered itself to his gut. “I’ll explain later…”
Footsteps from one direction and grunting from the other drew her attention. In one direction was a pair of young-looking snow leopard girls, maybe college age, the red head armed with a pistol the other armed with a shotgun. In the other direction Skyler was crawling out of the drivers side of her overturned car.
“Hey Nyx” he said, “Sorry, but I may have scratched your car”
Nyx chuckled for a moment before the rib situation stopped her, “Its ok space marine. Its ok”
Nyx sat back on her heels. She was alive, this time the demon had gone down. It wasn’t dead yet, but she’d make sure that next time it rose it would go down for God damn good.
