I recently visited the Wichita Art Museum where they were displaying a special exhibit of Art Deco pieces. I couldn’t resist shooting photographs of some of the shinier items.
This Electrolux Canister Vacuum Cleaner model 30 dates back to around 1937. I have a personal connection to this piece: As a child in the 1960s, I can remember my mom using one of these. The front end always reminded me of a face. The hose from the cleaning head plugged into the ‘mouth’ on the front of the device. The part that swoops up from the ‘nose’, between the ‘eyes’, and across the ‘forehead’ is a release handle. Pull that out to remove the dirt bag. The curved rails allowed it to slide easily over the carpet as Mom dragged it around.
ADDED NOTE:
I am amazed at the number of comments this photo has attracted. It truly surprises me how many memories this piece has jogged. I didn't expect more than two or three of my watchers to be familiar with it.
While preparing this submission, a quick search on eBay turned up several of these babies.

I believe it was a pair of these they used in the movie Sandlot. That’s my only nostalgic connection to it. My parents owned an old Kirby vacuum cleaner. I’m guessing it was an 80s model. My brother and I used to steal the hose attachments and use them with a backpack to play Ghost Busters.
We had one of these when I was a kid. I liked that we could disconnect the hose from the mouth end and attach it to the rear end, making it into a powerful blower. Aim the hose straight up and the exhaust air would suspend a baseball hovering about three feet above. These were also great for keeping blanket forts inflated with warm air - but were rather noisy.

Designed by Lurelle Guild. Looking at some of her work, I was surprised that she didn't design the samovar.
