The result of my latest hyperfixation, meet Pola! I want to stress that Pola is NOT a manokit
Instead she is from a different unnamed species. I didn't mean to write a whole bunch of lore on her species but it did kinda happen cause...ya know...hyperfixation moment >w<
- They are native to a small string of Carribean islands, and excellent, fast swimmers.
- They appear to have shared traits with the Hawaiian manokits (Belonging to Dubmutt) but there is no confirmed relation
- Their highly poisonous saliva comes from a diet of deadly manchineel fruits, pufferfish and other toxic flora and fauna. They can tightly regulate the amount of poison they excrete according to the situation or personal preference
- When on land they groom themselves thoroughly and often to cover their short fur in this poison, protecting them against the deadly predators that stalk the islands. This makes them quite vulnerable in the time between exiting the water and grooming themselves, although their poisonous bite is still to be feared in this time.
- Their eyes are very sensitive to undiluted light and dry out extremely fast out of the water, so they are almost always closed when out of the water. On land they use a primitive form of echolocation to navigate, but it isn't very sharp and they occasionally have to open their eyes a little to confirm what they're seeing.
- When on land they communicate by clicking, chirping and trilling, and in the water they communicate by flashing their photophores in a series of patterns. Different packs have slightly different ways of flashing their photophores, leading to a kind of "accent" unique to that pack. They are intelligent and able to learn or create new languages if needed.
- They are not sexually dimorphic, they reproduce by laying eggs and can tell the level of health and virility of one another by the size, poofiness and how well groomed their mane is (not usually noticable to people outside their species)
- They usually live in close-knit packs with the leader usually being the strongest, healthiest member. The leader however doesn't act particularly different to any other member, aside from always being the first out of the water after a group hunt and usually being the one to resolve particularly difficult disputes. The pack often hunts and plays together, and will feed and care for any members that are young, old, sick, injured or disabled, including guiding them into the water if they want to swim!
- They experience gender & sexuality the same way humans do, with some members being born LGBT+
- They are capable of carving items, starting fires and weaving clothes and tools, but usually only wear clothes or accessories for the fashion and self expression
